Does anybody else's dog eat raw potato???

Postby Violette » Wed Apr 25, 2007 8:49 pm

Meg loves raw potato. She was pestering me for some when she was a young pup, and in the end I threw one for her like a ball - sort of "you won't like it, you daft mutt. But if you won't believe me, then try it for yourself!" And she did 8O .

I'm not very keen on giving her any, because I'm sure I heard somewhere that it wasn't that good for them - not dangerous or anything, just a bit hard to digest.

So we have sort of compromised by me giving her some of the peelings when I am preparing them - she will hear/smell/somehow suss out that I am doing it, and come from wherever in the house she is to stand beside me and wait for them.

I think it is the crunch she likes, because she also loves other raw vegetables (carrots, cucumber, white cabbage, and she would KILL for red pepper), but I don't mind her having them. It is just that I thought raw potato was hard for them to digest.

Anybody any idea? :?

One of my dogs use to love eating raw potato, soon stopped it when I read this 8O

These contain solanine glycosides which can cause vomiting, abdominal pain, bloody diarrhoea, nervous system stimulation, depression, trembling, paralysis & cardiac arrest in dogs

Crikey! 8O 8O 8O

I never noticed any of those problems, but then she only got a few bits of peel. But believe me, that's the last she will ever have!!!!

I had just some vague idea that it was a bit indigestible, but as no other dog I have ever known had ever wanted any, I hadn't paid any particular attention.

Thank you so much (karma clicked) for telling me, Annestaff.

I'll try that and see - tho' I'm a bit scared about what I might find!

I should have thought of that before, but I'm still new to computers and internet (apart from word-processing and strictly work-related stuff).

Got some advice on another forum, where they said pretty well the same thing as you, but commented that it was green potatoes that were the worst culprit - and I have certainly never let her have any of those. I knew they could poison humans in certain conditions, and didn't take any risks with her.
