Besides food, water, shelter, sleep and social activities, your bird also needs intellectual stimulation through games and training. It has been discovered that birds are capable to understand and undergo problem solving, and can learn by example just like children. It is not yet known if they do is consciously or instinctively, but it is a fact that the parrot is one some of the most intelligent birds. As birds evolve, their analytical skills develop more and more. Some birds can use tools, such as small wood sticks to open fruit or seeds. Other birds can understand quite well the human language. It was initially thought that parrots can only repeat words, but it has been revealed that they can also understand their meaning. The most famous parrot, Alex, has once commented on his freshly clean cage by saying that “It looks good”. Alex had a hundred words vocabulary and could identify 50 different objects, but also quantities until six, colors, and five different shapes. He could understand the difference between big and small, the same and the other, and above and under.
