Post subject: Please give me your advice
Just before christmas me and my minature schnauzer was very badly attacked by another dog in the street. We are both slowly making a full recovery, but my main concern is my dog.Since the unfortunate incident when i take my dog for his exercise i get that nervous and anxious about him being attacked again i have to admit i keep him on his extendable lead. This makes me feel really guilty but i worry it may happen again.Could someone please give me some advice about letting him off his lead again? Thanks for listening i really appreciate it

unfortuantly there will allways be dog owners that don't train their dogs properly. Have you though of going back to classes to boost your's and your dogs confidence again. I've been attacked a few times by dogs thats why I am a bit nervous of Skye i'm alright with little dogs not big ones.

Very sorry to hear what happened to you both.

Just glad you were not seriously hurt.

I haven't experienced this but it's obviously going to take time before you get your confidence back. Perhaps you would benefit from some expert advice from a dog behaviorist. You can have someone come to the house and she will walk your dog with you on occasion if you want and can offer advice on how you and your dog can overcome this.

Good luck.

Hi there

This is an awful thing to have happened to you both, but believe it or not your dog will have gotten over it by now, I know this as my mums CKC Spaniel was attacked by an EBT very severly and was scared physically but not mentally, he is extremely outgoing and loves all dogs no fear whatsover.

However you will be frightened and the problem is you will transmit this down your lead, the best thing for you to do is to let your dog off and go back to your normal routine, don't panic when you see another dog, it is unlikely to happen again. Be calm and positive.

Sam the CKCS is now 10 years old and had many happy years of off lead walks since he was 6 mths old and the incident happened and we have had no negative incidents since.

If you soothe your dog or show that your are worried, your dog will look at you and copy you, so be positive and so wil your dog.
