URGENT: CHINA DOG CULLS
The material below has been prepared and sent to Conservative Animal Welfare by Gavin Sayer. You will see that Animals Asia are also involved in this matter, and have expressed their own concerns to the Chinese Government.

Knowing what happened pre-Olympics in Athens, it would appear that the same practice is now being pursued in Beijing.

If you require any further information, please get in touch with Gavin
and do please cross-post these details to your own contacts.

With best wishes. SUZY

The link http://www.care2.com/c2c/share/detail/213855 can be copied & pasted as a web address & this takes you to a blog prepared by someone giving full details + pretty graphic pictures of what has been going on so far - the policy is now in place in Beijing (without a doubt in relation to the Olympics) but the even greater worry is that if they feel the policy has worked in Beijing they are looking to extend it to other areas of China (unfortunately it has already led to dog culls in other areas - see the Animals Asia link at the bottom of this email).

The policy in Beijing is basically to send 'death squads' out to batter any dogs to death with sticks & other horrific implements (some are not even dead when they are buried in pits), not just strays but also dogs that are owned, even some that have already been vaccinated for rabies !!

There are lots of postal & email addresses in the blog but to summarise them + adding a few of my own as I have been writing letters & sending emails for a few days now :-

- Minister Gao Qiang, Ministry of Health - No.1 Xi Zhi Men Wai Nan Lu Rd, Xi Cheng District, Beijing, 100044, China.

- His Excellency, Hu Jintao

- Rt Hon David Miliband MP - DEFRA, Nobel House, 17 Smith Square, London, SW1P 3JR (secretaryof <mailto:secretaryofstateATdefra.gsi.uk> stateATdefra.gsi.uk <mailto:'secretaryofstateATdefra.gsi.uk> )

- You can also email your local MP (www.writetothem.com) & tell them about the issue, include the 'care2' link, above & ask them if they will take some action, bring it up in Parliament, write to the Chinese Embassy & Chinese Government officials etc.

Obviously the more letters/emails people can send + the more people are made aware of the 'care2' link the better, so they see what is going on & hopefully get involved themselves to put as much pressure as possible on China to think again.

In any correspondence we need to remain polite whilst firmly making the point - in my letters & emails I have stated that I will be boycotting anything to do with the Olympics unless they change the policy in Beijing (the main Olympic sponsors are detailed in the 'care2' link).

Animals Asia are the main animal welfare organisation in Asia & the link http://www.animalsasia.org/index.php?modul...menupos=1&lg=en takes you to what they have done & are doing in relation to a number of dog culls across the country (it also gives further addresses to write to or email) - they have offered 50,000 muzzles to the Mayor of Beijing to try & reverse the ruling that all dogs over 35cm tall must be killed because of the rabies risk to people (the muzzles are a temporary measure to allow time for other policies to be brought in).

Animals Asia have met with Chinese officials to try & persuade them that their policies in relation to dog culls are not only completely inhumane but also ineffective in controlling rabies & that effective policies of rabies vaccinations, programs of animal welfare education to reduce the number of strays from irresponsible owners etc etc are the only ways to reduce the rabies risk in the medium to long-term.

That's horrific, I plan on boycotting the beijing olympics and I think everyone should, I think that would send the biggest message to China that they can't treat animals (or indeed their citizens) like that. We need a bigger campaign here in the UK to stop people buying chinese goods too. I just wish we knew before we bought whether they are made in China or not, sometimes it isn't that easy.

Sadly, this is a regluar occurance in many countries where dogs are concerned as about as useful as garbage.

I really hope someone sits up and takes note Confused

Well, when the Chinese government wont even stop the awful and cruel killing of dogs and cats for food and fur coats - then this is really nothing and in a way if they start controlling the numbers of dogs and cats in their society then maybe in the long run there will be less torture for these poor animals to go through...

This is how they treat animals AND THIS COMES WITH A VERY BIG WARNING SIGN!!!!! I doubt anyone here will really have the stomach to view all this. THIS IS THE MOST UPSETTING VIDEO I HAVE EVER SEEN (in fact I had to turn it off and I was feeling very sick and sobbing)

I've seen the one where the raccoon is skinned alive just recently, even after having it's full sking ripped off the poor animal was disgarded on a heap very much alive. I have to agree it is the most horrific video I have seen. I immediately emailed my MP and MEP's with the link to complain. The MEP's replied that they are trying to do their best to get this practice stamped out.
All we can do is boycott asian made products, only buy British or from countries that you know have high welfare standards and BOYCOTT THE OLYMPICS.
Think I need to start writing to the athletes that are going to compete and show them what they are supporting if they go.

I have seen pics and vids from other sites that are horrific, absolutely heartbreaking! Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad
Even now after seeing a vid maybe 6 months ago i still, in my head can see the eyes of that poor poor dog that was being skinned alive! Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad how can someone be soo sick and evil!!!!! Twisted Evil Twisted Evil
I think more people should be made aware of what happens and then perhaps we could help combat it.
I think those who have seen the vids and still will continue in what they are doing should be named and shamed eg. Jennifer Lopez, who has seen vids of these poor animals but still refuses to stop wearing fur! Evil or Very Mad
But those like Paris Hilton who have declared never to wear fur again as she had no idea of the barbarity involved, should also be named.

I agree with you about naming and shaming these celebritys who still continue to wear fur, of all the inhuman things we do to animals skinning them alive just for their fur so some silly woman can wear it is beyond me, jennifer Lopez should be named and shamed she must have a cold heart.
