Dog Forums - poorly reubin davo - Wed Jan 31, 2007 9:30 pm Post subject: poorly reubin
my retriever x saluki reubin has been diagnosed with cancer , he has a large growth on his back leg , and another growth growing underneath it . the vet said its not good and doesnt give him a long life span . he also has a cough that is worse in the evenings for which the vet prescribed him steroids , but tonight he has brought up all his tea , does anyone know if this is a side effect of the tablets ? or to do with the cancer ?
littlelab - Wed Jan 31, 2007 9:52 pm Post subject:
I am so sorry to hear about your boy.
It could be a side effect of the tablets, sometimes steroids can make them sick. I would speak to your vet in the morning the worry being dehydration more than anything.
(((((((HUGS)))))) to you both
xx

How is Reubin this morning?
davo - Thu Feb 01, 2007 10:14 pm Post subject:
reubin is doin ok today thanks , he stopped being sick and hasnt been sick today . i didnt give him his tablets this morning , the vet said its not usually a side effect but to leave him off them for a day or two and try him again , if hes sick again he cant take the tablets . to look at him you wouldnt think theres anything wrong with him besides the fact that he sleeps alot , but that could also be his age hes 13 . he still runs around on walks and has mad five minutes . thankyou to everyone who has left such nice messages on here , its very warming to know people care enough to take the time to do so . jabbro - Thu Feb 01, 2007 10:25 pm Post subject:
I am glad to hear that he has been ok today. It it so worrying when a pet is ill, you feel so helpless.
Here is hoping that he will be ok on the tablets. littlelab - Thu Feb 01, 2007 11:42 pm Post subject:

reus had quite a lively day today , being a nutter out on his walk , just one question if anyone knows , do dogs dig when they are in pain ? i know bitches dig when they are in labour and its meant to be a sign of pain , but does that apply to all ? because reu does dig at the carpet alot , really digging hard like hes trying to get to australia ! and its not to get comfortable . so i wondered if that means hes in pain .
Hcollie85 - Sat Feb 03, 2007 12:21 am Post subject: rueben
Thats good,
I cant help you with that but i had a thought dunno if its true but if a dog is ill and their digging, maybe it could be that they consentrate on it that they forget the pain isnt there
Heather
littlelab - Sat Feb 03, 2007 12:25 am Post subject:
Good question, I have to say I don't have an answer to that one, I do find that when Maia gets stressed she digs at our hands to get our attention.
It could be stress related behaviour, when did the digging start? Can you pin point it?
davo - Sat Feb 03, 2007 7:26 pm Post subject:
He has always dug at the floor to an extent , but not like he is now , before it was to get comfy , but the way hes digging now is like my bitch did when she was in labour . last night he was already comfy but then got up and started digging like mad , i had to stop him it was that bad , thought he was going to wear a whole in the carpet .
Hcollie85 - Sat Feb 03, 2007 7:30 pm Post subject: rueben
How is Ruebin doing now?, the way he is digging it doesnt sound good

Go to pet photos under community in bottom of left hand column, and upload photos in there.
Once you have done that, right click on photo and look for properties, open this and find the address which starts http, highlight and click to copy.
Go to message/thread/reply and click on img paste pciture and click img again and this should insert piccie. davo - Tue Feb 13, 2007 7:09 pm Post subject:

for a brief while reus lump got smaller , dont know why maybe the tablets he was taking , hes still on the tablets but a lower dose , but now its got huge and its really bothering him , he constantly licks at it and its very red and angry looking . hes going to the vets tomorrow , not that they can do anything , but to see what they say , maybe they can ease the irratation ?
sambo - Sun Feb 25, 2007 4:41 pm Post subject:
Lovely photos davo and best of luck at the vets tomorrow be sure to let us know how you get on.
davo - Mon Feb 26, 2007 9:04 pm Post subject:
vet said to try upping the dose on tablets , see if it calms it then drop the dose again , and keep doing that , not alot else they can do . so will try that and see what happens .

I was just thinking maybe you could put some soothing chamomile on the lump if its causing some discomfort.
(((hugs))) to you both.
davo - Tue Feb 27, 2007 11:20 pm Post subject:
what happens if a dog licks cammomile ? is it safe or could it make him sick ? dont want to make him any worse ! thought id check before i try it .

davo - Sat Mar 03, 2007 11:46 pm Post subject:
reubins lump is looking rather red still and sore from being licked , the vet said back along that worst case scenario was if the lump bursts , that explained to me was that it would ulcerate , get infected and then burst , im worried that one area of it looks as though it may be starting to ulcerate , so will be taking him back to the vets on monday . also his cough has got really bad tonight , worse than its been for weeks , and thats with him being on the high dose of his tablets that are meant to be to help his cough . the steroids are making him so hungry , he tried to steal my kit kat earlier whilst i was eating it ! i know steroids make them hungry , i had a lab who was on them most of his life ( doubley bad being as labs are always hungry anyway ) but iv just never seen reu like this , hes raiding bins when were out , before some days i had to try and persuade him to eat ! i just feel really helpless at the moment and dont know what to do for the best for him . Hcollie85 - Sun Mar 04, 2007 12:05 am Post subject: ruebin
Im sorry to hear that, really im not sure what to say other than you could get a gate to stop ruebin goin in the kitchen but i assume he'll just howl and whine
Heather
davo - Sun Mar 04, 2007 12:10 am Post subject:
sorry didnt quite make myself clear about the bin thing , he doesnt raid the bin at home , he goes looking in bins whilst we are out walking , to see if anyones left any food in them ! and theres a lady who puts bread on top of the bins for the birds , he goes straight to that and eats as much as he can reach !
Hcollie85 - Sun Mar 04, 2007 12:14 am Post subject: ruebin
i seeeeee
Heather
davo - Sun Mar 18, 2007 9:31 pm Post subject:
An update on reu , we`ve been back to the vets as his lump was looking so sore , it has started to ulcerate in one place ,mostly due to him licking it (which i spend most of my time trying to stop him doing ) hes got some cream to put on that area which he hates the smell of let alone the taste , so he leaves it alone when that has been administered ,but then straight back to it after . i dont want to use a buster collar if i can help it , my poor boy is distressed enough without that , iv tried putting a bandage on it but it wont stay on , so if anyones got any ideas please let me know . basically iv to stop him licking it , but if it starts to weep then he has to go back again , so heres hoping i can stop it getting worse .
littlelab - Sun Mar 18, 2007 9:54 pm Post subject:
I am so sorry to hear that he is still in pain, I don't really know what else to suggest other than maybe contacting an animal homeopath to work in conjunction with your vet?

hi sorry to hear about reubin, just to let you know sometimes wilson does it in his sleep when he is dreaming. he gets up and just starts digging frantically. i know he is asleep cos when you shout his name he just stops looks at you then lies down again as if nothing was going on. maybe as reubin is sleeping more he is dreaming more. just a possibility.
lots of hugs and cuddles for him. littlelab - Tue Mar 20, 2007 2:31 pm Post subject:
Good to hear Reubin is senjoying himself with his doggie pals though davo - Tue Mar 20, 2007 3:18 pm Post subject:
reubin tends to do his digging whilst awake , he digs at the carpet frantically before lying down . hes dug the bedroom carpet so much hes made a hole in it , its quite distressing to watch , i try to stop him , but as soon as you turn around he carries on .
davo - Sun Apr 01, 2007 7:58 pm Post subject:
reubin has been really bad since last week , off his food and not able to get up on his own , he looked so bad on friday , the light had gone from his eyes and he was barely moving , i called my friends round to say goodbye to him and was trying to face the fact that i needed to ring the vet and say goodbye to him forever . he was much the same saturday morning , it was time to let him go , but by the afternoon he had a turn around , asked to go for a walk and even ate some tea , since then hes just got better and better . eating well and acting the clown like before , im so glad i didnt rush to the vets with him as its not this boys time to go . im taking him to the vets tomorrow as his tumour has burst and i need to get that checked . im so glad , i just cant believe the change in him , he really did look ready to give up . its great i get the pleasure of his company for a while longer yet . hes been having some raiki healing , so maybe thats helped him , whatever it is is brill as my boy gets to stay here and bring more happiness to more people . jabbro - Sun Apr 01, 2007 8:16 pm Post subject: Brilliant news!

An update on mr reu , since his near death experience hes just got better and better , totally back to the reu i knew before . hes a happy and lively dog again . his lump still annoys him alot and he never stops licking it , you can always tell where hes been lying as theres a wet patch from him licking it lol . unfortunately the lump has grown alot more , so he finds it awkward to get comfortable ,but once he sorts that hes quite happy until the next time he decides to change position . anyway hes doing good , thought all of you who have been following his progress might like to know . littlelab - Fri Apr 13, 2007 8:52 pm Post subject:

Hi all , not been on for a while , been busy caring for reubin a looking for my lost cat ( who iv still not found ) . yesterday was a horrible day for me , i had to have reubin put to sleep , he had totally gone off his food and was really skinny , his tumour was huge and was leaking fluid alot . the tumour started to affect his circulation and his leg started to swell up making it very difficult to walk , he tired so easily and to top it all i found another tumour up underneath his back legs ,that was huge too . he had no quality of life left so i had to let him go . so hes running free again and free of pain and with his mates . hes left a huge stamp on my heart and he`ll never be forgotten . he was so special and loving and i miss him loads . iv been thinking about writing this all day and it is as hard as i thought it would be , tears are running down my face as im typing . my friend wrote a lovely poem about him ,it made me laugh and cry at the same time . thought you guys might like to read it , so its below
reubin you will be sorely missed , these are a few words to show how much .
you truely were such a lovely chap ,
i miss your cuddles on my lap ,
half golden retriever half saluki ,
were the secrets behind your beauty ,
you always brought laughter and happiness to all ,
when you`d rather be in on the gossip than chasing a ball ,
none of your toys were really your thing ,
you would prefer a cushion to sink your teeth in ,
or maybe a game of hide and seek in cockington park ,
hiding yourself behind a tree from your mom was a lark ,
all the memories of your fantastic life will go on and on ,
there is a big gap for us now your gone ,
but let me say thankyou for the laughter and smiles ,
you were a true gentleman the only one for miles ,
you made me smile as you were never in a rush ,
i will meet you up there one day and i will remember my brush !

I am so so sorry, what a wonderful tribute to a gorgeous and much loved dog, please stay in touch, if you need to rant or talk, we're here for you.
((HUGS))
They're a very special gift; to be cherished and loved
You're chosen for each other; by God Himself above
It's a match made in heaven; so it can't be wrong
You're tied together by a bond; that's oh so strong
All they'll ever ask from you; is to be loved and fed
And at night make sure they have, fresh water and a bed
In return for so little; the rewards are so great
You'll get a companion for life; with some very special traits
When you are lost; and the end seems so far away
They'll walk by your side; they'll help you find your way
When life gets you down; they can put a smile on your face
As they run you in circles; with their fast pace
You'll share the good with the bad; you'll be happy and sad
And through it all you have a friend; the best you ever had
You're time together; will be special and unique
It will be as priceless to you; as a rare antique
Then before you know it; the day will arrive
When suddenly your life; takes a steep dive
The furry friend who's been with you for all of these years
Has now passed on; and left you in tears
As you sit and wonder; what did I do
Why is this all happening to you
Into each of our lives; a little rain must fall
And you must be strong; to answer the call
Your little one's spirit has flown home on the wings of a dove
To a special place that awaits them; in heaven above
St. Francis will meet them; when they get home
He will take them to a meadow; where they're free to roam
There in the meadows; down by the pond
Your furry friend will remember his loving bond
He'll look into the water; then you apppear
He can see you're frightened; he can feel your fear
Through the bond that still ties you; from heaven above
He looks down upon you; he sends you his love
Because you loved him; and because you care
Whenever you need him; he'll always be there
There in the meadows; they patiently wait for the day
When you will celebrate your life together; each and everyday
Waiting for that day; when you come walking back home
When together for an eternity; through the meadows you'll roam.
