Hi. We are very worried about our little two y/old pup.
On Friday she was unwilling to go outside and later at night she started getting thicking mucous around her eyes and coughing a bit, and the next day she was worse, breathing rapidly but not panting, but the breathing was as fast as panting if you know what I mean, yet was done with her mouth closed.
She puts her head up as if that eases her breathing; was completely off food. We never expected her to survive but on Sunday she was much better, even getting up to go outside and use the toilet, running around, which we discouraged, cos we were worried about her breathing. Mucous from eyes vanished by Sunday and she was back at her food with enthusiasm and looked alert and fine; except for teh breathing.
On doing research I wonder if she might have kennel cough, my first worry was distemper, but if she had that I think she would have died already, plus distemper does not usually involved rapid breathing.
Any advice will be helpful, we are not in a position to afford a vet, but if necessary will borrow money to get her to one; if it's felt that she is under a life threatening condition.

She deffo needs a vet, so you will have to borrow some money as it definetly sounds life threatening.

Although not quite the usual Kennel Cough there does seem to be an unusual strain around at the moment which fits the bill. The one thing which worries my is your South African flag. It is I suppose possibly that SA might have a similar strain around, but I would not know.
Canine Distemper is not common in the UK these days, not exactly unknown, but certainly not a common sight. But it is not uncommon for a dog to appear to recover for a while.
In view of the possibility of it being Distemper I would really like to see a vet checking the dog over. Because of the fact that both KC and Distemper are highly contagious I would also leave the dog in the car until called rather than taking her into the waiting room.

Thank you guys, I suspected Kennel Cough and distemper, but feel she is not showing the ordinary symptoms of distemper, and would, if she had it, most likely have died by now.
She got this disease when I took her to the local SPCA to be spayed a few weeks ago.

I'll be interested to hear what the vet has to say. You are such a long way from us that the range of diseases doing the rounds at the moment is likely to be totally different to here. As I said before, we almost never see canine distemper here these days. The last dog I saw with it was over 40 years ago, before the vaccines became common place. since reading this I've been wracking my brain about a tick borne disease which a friend's daughter, who used to live in Mozambique told me about, but for the life of me I cannot remember it.

Iv'e been trying to follow the outcome of your dogss problems, have you had any help from the vets and are you any wiser as to what could be wrong.

Thanks all, again. In the end we got antibiotics from our pharmacist, dosed all three dogs, the turaround in sickest one was phenomenal, all well now, just finishing the course, seems like kennel cough was the right diagnoss, and all OK now; dogs back to normal!
