How did you teach him hide? I want Harvey to do that honeydlc - Fri Dec 07, 2007 7:13 pm Post subject:
Lol Jacqui, actually it is quite easy.
I use clicker training with Obi, it is ideal for training all kinds of tricks. Just buy a clicker, get a pile of treats, and click the clicker and give him a treat a few times until he gets the idea that click=treat.
Obi wears a 'Canny Collar' when he's walking to stop him pulling, so I just popped it on him indoors and of course as it goes over his nose he immediately puts his paw up to brush it off (you could use a lead or similar and place it over his nose).
Every time his paw touches his nose to brush it off, click and treat (your timing has to be good).
If he's anything like Obi he will pick it up after a few tries and be able to do it without the canny collar or lead.
Then it's just a case of reinforcing with a click every time he puts his paw over his nose, gradually starting to withold the click until his paw is right over his nose.
When he's good at this, start adding in the word 'hide' and start dropping the click.
It maybe sounds complicated but it's very easy, it took Obi less than two days over a few sessions to learn it.
Hope that helps (and makes sense ), good luck

He is brilliant! No wonder you are so proud of him Jacqui_UK - Sat Dec 08, 2007 9:40 am Post subject:
WOW thanks for that great advice. Harvey just has a normal collar and lead so will have a ponder on what I can use to make him touch his nose.

Obi really is doing great! No wonder you are so impressed with him! they are best taught these things when they are young. Bubbles learnt lots of tricks when he was a small pup but now it takes a little while for him to get hold of something and he's only just over a year!! x
