Pet Breeders & Breeding - help please!

Post subject: help please!
hello all i am totally new to this board and was hoping for some advice?
my beautiful cat "sheba" (a lilac cornish rex) was supposed to go to stud this month - however while hanging my lil girls nappies on the line (yes - shock horror i use cloth!) she got out last month mid season and i am positive she is expecting (hangs head in shame for being so stupid!). there are 3 "swellings" in her slightly expanded waistline. now i have a hnd in animal care and lots of experience with c sections in cats (from working at a vats) however i do need help in preparing for heir arrival? what do i need to do. sheba is getting used to my dog cage - to allow her n kittens pricacy and safetly from my toddler, and i have a huge supply of towels and the basic first aig equipment. i also hve a bottle of lactol n some syringes just in case. what else do i need to do? what are the signs on labour? as you can imagine the only cats i have seen have been c sections or have done it on their own during the night at college so i missed it!. from dates i expect her to be due around the 29th august! - i know the date isnt set in stone and she will have them when she is ready!. please please help. i was hopefully starting up my own cattery but all this has been put on hold due to this unexpected pregnancy! - the studs owner was going to talk me thru her pedigree birth but i feel to embarrassed to phone her now!

Firstly welcome to Petchat Sally Very Happy I'm a dog person I'm afraid but I'm sure someone will be along shortly to help you prepare for the birth if indeed your cats expecting.

lol - if it had been a dog i wouldnt have worried - i have attended many dog births - but no "normal" cat ones! i am pretty sure she is pg she has a lovely slightly swollen belly with 3 "lumps" all new since last week (which should be right if i am reading my book correctly!). she will be about 3weeks + 3 days!

Already posted this on your other thread but here ya go...
Hi,
Make sure know other pets go near the queen, put her and her nest box, in a dark quiet corner of the house.
In labour, if you have a non-starter, not breathing or a bit too subdude, dip your finger in whisky, and place it on the kittens tounge, the same for pups.
We allways weaned our pups and kittens on similar things, it doesnt sound too nice, but god do they lap it up, porridge, done fairly milky, and let it cool, with, in kittens case, try putting some flaked fish in, be fairly liberal, if they dont like this, try some scraped lean beef, not mince as this carries to much gristle.
Once upon a few years back,
the family had a tortie and white persian, she was a stunner was TInker Bell, and she got out and got abused by a rather large wild haired black Tom, and when she had kittens the kittnes were so big, with big heads and she had 16 of them she was waddling with her back legs seperated for a whole week after that, poor little girl, but how would u like 16 big bodied, big headed babies coming out of your behind without any painkilling medicine ooh the pain, cant wait for your girl to have the kittens, take loads of pics will u
Be careful, cats are notoriuous for dissapearing off having there kittens, and brining them home once they are big enough to carry, that happened to an old moggy of ours.

Anything else you want to know?
Best wishes

I agree with everything Luke says but must say I don't believe in the whiskey on the tongue, could be quite harmful in my opinion. Ask your vet Very Happy

For a non-starter a good vigerous rub in a towel and a swing upwards and down should sort it out.
Lu-1 - Mon Jul 18, 2005 4:27 pm
Post subject:
well Anne the last time we had kittens in the house was probably about 9 years ago, the vets had different opinions to what they do now, although i have seen it work on a persian cross litter we had 2 non starters in and one came back to us due to this, although a little drowsy which is why it can make things worse sometimes
Best wishes

ok - the tom is still in the area. does anyone know if i can get him neutered?

i dont know who he belongs to, and i dont want to upset his owners, but its not a good thing letting him roam like this entire.

if i had him done what would the legal things be?

will a charity neuter him for me?

sorry so many questions.

btw - sheba is glowing!

if you phone the cpl, they may be able to issue you a voucher towards the cost of neutering. they used to do that in the manchester area. or do you have an rspca vets near to you. they may be able to help. Smile

sallyburdett - Fri Jul 22, 2005 3:06 pm

no there is no rspca vet nearby - not even an rspca warden. the nearest thing is an old friend who runs an animal sanctuary - she used to do all the rspca call outs.

the cpl wont issue me with a voucher unless i can gtee he has no owner. he is well fed and healthy so i assume he has a home somewhere, but no neighbours know where although they all recognise him! Laughing

ok back to the subject. she is getting fatter now - should i increase her food ration? as soon as i knew she was pg i put her on kitten food. she has 2 smallish meals a day but now seems hungry - should i give her more? - i know its sounds stupid but i read somewhere that u shouldnt let pg cat get fat cos it can cause probs in birthing!

thanks
pollaton - Tue Jul 26, 2005 8:24 am
Post subject:
i know they are supposed to eat kitten food for the extra protein, but most cats regulate their food intake so i am not sure how much you should be feeding her. it should tell you on the packet or tin. (dried is definately better) she will get mopre nutrients. Smile
sallyburdett - Thu Jul 28, 2005 11:07 am
Post subject:
she is on dried, i am free feeding her now so that she gets what she wants!

i am also gonna be a mum again (not a human lol), rex rescue has a lovely boy who is getting on a bit who needs a home. his owner (and breeder) has a terminal illness and has got to let all her babies get new homes. so bo is coming to live with me! he is a black smoke devon rex, with a slight kidny problem which is controlled by diet alone. cant wait for him to get here. he is having blood tests as his last ones showed no kidney prob at all so they have put him back on normal diet to retest to see if he still has the prob or if it has resolved!

i'm feeling all excited - kittens and a new pet! not the best timeing i know but hey! - he needs a new mum and i want to be it! - sheba loves her dog pen so much she spends most of her time in there (door is always open!) and is happily making early signs of nests! i bought another litter tray for her pen and feed her there now so that she is used to it. she spends nearly all day either in the pen or alseep on the bed in the same room. (she is in the spare room at the other end of the house - so v quiet!)

anyway enough rambling!

hi guys - well sheb is really starting to show now - cant believe its only 4 weeks to go!, bo will be comming to live with us end of next week - cant wait!. it seems we will have a housefull!

i am free feeding sheba dried kitten food and 2 meals a day of wet kitten food. she is wolfing everything down i put infront of her. i know cornish (if not monitered) are supposedly prone to obesity so i dont want her getting fat which could cause complications!

she has always been a skinny little thing and now just looks plump around her belly where she should be but nowhere else, so i'm not really worried atm.

lol pol

bo (the devon) and sheba (the cornish) both have curly fur. the coat has no guard hairs, and as such has been known to be hpoallergenic.

however this doesnt hold with everyone. as some peoples allergies are related to the dander, or cat spittle (eeuugghh) so the coat type wont affect the allergy.

lots of kitten movement still so i know everything is ok on that score and she is still "leaking" mucous which from reading up is a good sign.

This is brilliant news. Bless her and you. You both must be really shattered. Poor Sheba having the agony and stress of breach births Sad

Mum looks really contented now

The kittens are really beautiful. You must be so excited and releaved.

The beige one looks quite like Mum with wavy/curly hair?! Question

no unfortunatly none of the kitties will be curly coated Sad but that doesnt matter they are still gorgeous.

can i ask everyone to ask around for good homes?

each kitten will be:
vaccinated
vet wormed
frontlined
vet checked
neutered/spayed
blood tested (to be doubly sure daddy hasnt given them something nasty)

and they will come with a diet sheet, large bag of food, litter sample, care sheets, toys and vaccination records.

all of this is going to cost me a minimum of £200 per kitten - i'm not asking this much but they are more expensive than "ordinary" moggies. the kittens could have been registered as cornish varients as dsh (dad) is a reccognised outcross for cornish - but i would rather they go to pet homes - hence the neutering.

thanks

i didn't think you could neuter cats until they are 5-6 month old? but i do think its a good idea to get everything done. i'd love one, but will have to suffice with the pics. Smile

no there is a common misconception that neutering (in cats not dogs) can only be done from 4months old. however many many vets are now practicing early neutering as all studies have shown no detrimental effects - they grow the same as cats that are neutered at 4. 8 & 12 months. if your interested i can find you a couple of links to the research. it has been found to have a more positive effect as kittens recover quicker from the anaesthetic and appear to need less recouperation time.

i think that is great news. it means the breeders can have more of the responsibility and unless it is a cat that is good to breed from it makes sense.
yeah send me the articles i would like to read them. i don't own cats anymore, but stuff like that is always interesting. maybe you could post something on the site. may be good for everyone to have a read of. Smile

posted as requested. i have stuck a few links in the petchat general pets forum. with the request it be made sticky as it does have lots of valuable information, and is something all breeders/owners should consider.

hello iam new to this site

i have a male english bull terrier he is only 7mths at the moment but we would really like to use him as a stud dog. his blood line is very good his pedigree line has many champions his father and his grand father won crufts.

i feel a little like a doggie pimp Rolling Eyes , but would really like to know what is the best age to but him out to stud?

if some one could please give me some information or if any one out their is a english bull terrier breeeder would love some help?

No reputable breeder would want to use your dog at stud unless he had been shown and he was an exemplary example of his breed. Owning a stud dog is not an easy way to make money. Bearing in mind you have a bull terrier he could become dog aggressive and they tend to start cocking their leg in the house. Also you would need to have a steady supply of bitches for him.
Are you prepared to take responsibility for any puppies he produces or do you feel that once he's done his bit the puppies are all the bitch owners responsibility?
Ask yourself the question 'who would use your dog at stud' some of his pups could end up being bought by entirley the wrong people.
I'd say keep him as a pet. He doesn't need to have puppies.

When our cat had her three kittens there were no problems at all, they seem to sort it all out for themselves. We had previously made her a cosy area to have her babies but she chose to give birth in the airing cupboard on a duvet (not silly are they?) and that became their bed for the next 6 weeks.

It was an absolutely great experience and fortunately we kept one kitten (who grew into the most lovable cat ever) and found good homes for the other two.
