I got a interesting email from shop/website petzoo.uk, if anyone uses this site or call's into this shop please read the mail they sent me.
Hi
This is Craig from Pet Zoo. It has come to our attention that some idiot has spoofed an email from our order confirmation email address orderconfirm@petzoo and has emailed a potentially dangerous link for people who don't have regularly updated antivirus software installed on their computer.
Please delete the email immediately. Unfortunately there's very little that can be done to stop spoof emails, even PayPal, eBay and many of the banks suffer from these.
As a rule for the future in case it happens again, whenever we send you an email:
1. We will never give you a link in an email to download any software from an external website i.e. anything other than petzoo.co.uk
2. Will almost always greet you personally by name at the beginning of the email
3. Will include our standard signature and disclaimer, shown at the bottom of this email
4. We will never ask you for your password by any contact method.
Another thing to look out for is spelling and errors you wouldn't normally expect to find, such as in the Stars email our email address is spelt wrong (info@petzo.co.uk).
We take security very seriously and use industry standard anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall software which is updated regularly automatically.
For your peace of mind I have changed all of our adminstration system passwords this morning and am about to research ways in which we can make it easier for you to spot spoof emails that may appear to come from us.
If you don't have any anti virus software I recommend doing a google search for "AVG Free" which is the free version of AVG's excellent anti-virus software which many people I know use. On my home computers I use AVG and have never had a virus that AVG didn't immediately protect me from.
However, this is not a professional opinion and merely a personal recommendation.
I've set up a special email address to forward any new spoofing emails received, it's stopspoofing@petzoo.co.uk
It's strange really as just the other day my father in law received a spoof email from eBay and emailed it to their spoofing department, who clearly didn't read the email and replied in a manner which suggested that even Ebay themselves thought the spoofed email was genuine and that he was making a complaint about not receiving the bike he'd paid for (which he'd never even bought)!
Kindest regards,
Craig
