Post subject: Male Amazons Reply with quote

Has anyone had any experience with male Amazons?

As i have got a blue-fronted amazon and have never known the sex but i have researched typical behaviour of male amazons and it very much fits with what Eric does. Hormonal, aggressive, quite moody wings out and flaring eyes! Rolling Eyes Shocked

I am the only one in the household that will pick her up, she will be very aggressive to my dad and lunge and attack him, if given the chance. Eric has only bitten me once and it was for a reason and totally my faulty, by putting my hand into her cage straight after i got back from a holiday.

Although recently i can feel that Eric just wants to bite me, and so have avoided getting her out of the cage. Any ideas on how to overcome her biting, so that i can handle her again.
If i was to tell Eric 'no' in a firm voice while holding him/her then i am going on the right route to getting bitten, he/she is quite dominant.

Help??!! Sad

Hi there sorry to hear i'm afraid i have never owned a parrot so can't give any advice but i have run a quick search and compiled this bit of info for you hope it helps.

They tend to be bonded to a particular thing/person, if they become agressive a period of cold turkey from touch is advised.

Always note that they do live at/or around the normal human age expentancy thus they do have periods of withdrawal and love.

In a shorter message, stop touching them and fussing over them let them get over it.

Depending on the age of your parrot he could seems to be entering puberty i.e. going into breeding condition and hence the territorial agression. Some Amazons are like that for just a few weeks in a year.

Just leave him alone for a week or two and watch him carefully when approaching his cage to take him out. I think he should settle down. The 3 "hot-heads" types are Yellow-napes, Double Yellows and Blue-fronts

Hope this helps Lou. Wink Keep us posted how you get on as it could help some body else out who has the same problem.
