| Post subject: Sad statistics at holiday time especially |
 |

One female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in six years. One female cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 kittens in seven years. Between 8 to 12 million animals enter shelters annually; 35-60% are euthanized, almost all because there are no homes for them. Please don't breed or buy while shelter animals die....
Food for thought, I was looking through the Oldies on the LLR, when I say Old.. many people consider 4 years old to be old!! These are the dogs hardest to find homes for, every one wants a pup.
Just recently there has been a massive up turn in dogs arriving at shelters and pounds..why? Many reasons but at this time of year a minority of people decide they can't be bothered to make arrangements for their pets whilst they take their annual holiday, so they turf their beloved companion of years onto the street!!
Here are few startling and quite frankly sad stories from this month already..
A lady walked into a pub with her dog in the North of England, unclipped the lead and walked out.
There have been 2 cases reported of dogs running loose down the motorway this week.. are these dogs turfed out at service stations?
A lady on another forum was looking for a home for a dog after the owner asked her to dog sit for 3 days and never bothered to come back for her dog, when phoned she replied "Oh find him a home will ya, I'll get another one when I get back off my holiday"!!!!
And there will be more sad stories of dogs arriving bewildered at the pounds after being 'dumped' the lucky ones will find their way to a rescue centre or foster home, many oldies and some of the others, many bull breeds for example, may not. ____________ Natalie and Co xxx

when i worked at the petshop we had a couple of cats abondoned there, a few dogs left tied up outside. i once found a rat in a food barrel that somebody had dumped. a couple of guinea- pigs. not to mention the amount of irresponsible owners that came in regularly to say 'my cats pregnant again' i just will never get my head around wh people get these animals in the first place. ____________

My friend had a family live next door to her and they had 3 dogs. Periodically a dog would disappear and then there would be a new puppy there and so it went on.
It was obvious what was happening but my friend couldn't prove it. ____________

Its very sad but happens all to frequently. I work in a welfare centre and it never ceases to amaze me what little attachment some people have to their pets (of any size/species). I constantly hear the phrase 'I want to get rid of', for varying silly reasons.
The biggest problem we are having at the moment is rabbits. People going on holiday and dumping them all over the place, we can hardly keep up. Rabbits are the 3rd most popular pet in Britain but probably one of the most neglected.........pop it in a hutch at the bottom of the garden and thats about as much stimulation as most rabbits get!!
We often get all manner of animals dumped at work. Tied to the gate or dumped in cardboard boxes (quite often the boxes are empty when we arrive in the morning!!!). People seem to have no sense of responsibility, it always seems to be someone elses problem!
Sorry about the rant! It makes me soooooo mad. |

Just took Penny for her booster jab and worming tablets and the vets had 9 kittens dumped on their doorstep this morning. They say the poor wee things are 2-3 weeks old What is wrong with people |

Unfortunately we live in a throw away society, and the sad reality is it happen all over the world not just here.
There is a wonderful organisation called ANVIL that are helping get legislation changed on Ireland at the mo, worth Googling to check out the website.

Some people are just cruel, selfish, and thoughtless to say just a few, these poor animals have feelings and are just dropped like a ton of bricks.
It makes me sick, my animals are part of the family and loved by us all.
When we have a holiday ( 1 week per year! If we are lucky!!) my dad and friends rally and look after them all so there is no change to their routine.
What a sad world.
