[B] Confused

I got a lumpy cat it has a bacterial infection but vats can not figure out what is causing it. Does any have any ideas as to what would cause that. She was a stray cat and I had found her and she was sick and now she is all better except for her lumps. She gets lumps full of pus and then they pop and she gets a hole and pus oozes out of the hole on and off until it heals. She is a playful and very lovable cat and I love her just the way she is but I worry about her so I was hoping I could find someone who might have a clue what is wrong with her. She doesn't have cancer. I am also worried about how she got it and if she has kittens will they get it too. So if anyone has had a similar case please respond.

Perhaps the Mods can post under Ask the Vet nurse section.

Sorry to hear about lumpy cat, but wonderful that you have taken her on, of you want to stop infection of the lumps, have you thought about speaking to a homeopathic vet?

Or perhaps bathe her in a teatree solution which is extremely good at getting rid of bacterial infections, you can also apply lavender oil or tea tree oil topically/

The lumps sound like absesses. She may need a strong course of anti-biotics to clear them up.

Please , when you take her to the vets again ask him about getting her spayed too. The world is already full of unwanted cats and kittens Wink.

Where would I be able to find teatree oil or solution at? The vet has given her antibiotics before and they didn't work much the only thing that seemed to help at all was penecillan for people. I think she has a giant lump growing inside her and then when it gets too full of pus finds a place and gets rid of some of it. I'm not sure though. It started out on one of her legs then moved to the other then it went away for awhile and then it came back only this time it was on her side and it's been there for several monthes. It starts out a lump then pops and becomes a hole. I noticed that if she is under phisical stress it tends to leak pus so I was thinking maybe the hole would heal if she could stay away from all physical stess. But with 2 extremely hyper kids chasing her around and picking her up all the time that won't happen.

I think if she was mine I'd be finding a different vet for a second opinion. It may be an infection that is resistant to some anti-biotics . I think the vet should take a swab and grow a culture of the infection to find out exactly which bacteria is present, then he can treat it accordingly.

As regards to the children, I would keep the cat well away from them. Apart from the fact that she may be in agony everytime she moves and is picked up, the bacteria leaking out of the hole could affect them too Shocked and you don't want your children getting sick, do you .

All this treatment will be expensive Rolling Eyes . If you can't afford it (and I don't wish to sound patronising here Wink ), is there anywhere you could rehome the cat, a cat rescue centre for example, as they may have the facilities to deal with this sort of problem.

I would definitely advise you take her back to the vets as she is obviously suffering and if you love and care for her you will do the right thing also if you are on benefits you can take her along to your local P.D.S.A and they will treat her for a small donation.

P.S i have moved this topic to ask the vetnurse so that you will get expert advice. Wink

mm -a mixture of advice given on this one.

Firstly I would advise against putting tee tree etc onto your cat. This may make things worse in this instance. You can bathe the area in warm salt water if your cat allows it.

If this is a bacterial infection she needs the appropriate antibiotics to treat her. A swab would be great as the correct drugs can then be chosen rather than giving them to her on a trial and error basis.

Swabs are not too expensive compared with skin biopsies/blood testing etc. You need to go back to your vet asap and ask to have this problem sorted as your cat is not happy. As suggested PDSA may be able to help with the cost if you are on benefits. Let us know how things go - good luck.
