hello all i am totally new to this board and was hoping for some advice?
my beautiful cat "sheba" (a lilac cornish rex) was supposed to go to stud this month - however while hanging my lil girls nappies on the line (yes - shock horror i use cloth!) she got out last month mid season and i am positive she is expecting (hangs head in shame for being so stupid!). there are 3 "swellings" in her slightly expanded waistline. now i have a hnd in animal care and lots of experience with c sections in cats (from working at a vats) however i do need help in preparing for heir arrival? what do i need to do. sheba is getting used to my dog cage - to allow her n kittens pricacy and safetly from my toddler, and i have a huge supply of towels and the basic first aig equipment. i also hve a bottle of lactol n some syringes just in case. what else do i need to do? what are the signs on labour? as you can imagine the only cats i have seen have been c sections or have done it on their own during the night at college so i missed it!. from dates i expect her to be due around the 29th august! - i know the date isnt set in stone and she will have them when she is ready!. please please help. i was hopefully starting up my own cattery but all this has been put on hold due to this unexpected pregnancy! - the studs owner was going to talk me thru her pedigree birth but i feel to embarrassed to phone her now! |

Firstly welcome to Petchat Sally I'm a dog person I'm afraid but I'm sure someone will be along shortly to help you prepare for the birth if indeed your cats expecting. |

lol - if it had been a dog i wouldnt have worried - i have attended many dog births - but no "normal" cat ones! i am pretty sure she is pg she has a lovely slightly swollen belly with 3 "lumps" all new since last week (which should be right if i am reading my book correctly!). she will be about 3weeks + 3 days!

I can't see there being a right lot of difference between a cat and a dog birth so you should cope ok |

Already posted this on your other thread but here ya go...
Hi,
Make sure know other pets go near the queen, put her and her nest box, in a dark quiet corner of the house.
In labour, if you have a non-starter, not breathing or a bit too subdude, dip your finger in whisky, and place it on the kittens tounge, the same for pups.
We allways weaned our pups and kittens on similar things, it doesnt sound too nice, but god do they lap it up, porridge, done fairly milky, and let it cool, with, in kittens case, try putting some flaked fish in, be fairly liberal, if they dont like this, try some scraped lean beef, not mince as this carries to much gristle.
Once upon a few years back,
the family had a tortie and white persian, she was a stunner was TInker Bell, and she got out and got abused by a rather large wild haired black Tom, and when she had kittens the kittnes were so big, with big heads and she had 16 of them she was waddling with her back legs seperated for a whole week after that, poor little girl, but how would u like 16 big bodied, big headed babies coming out of your behind without any painkilling medicine ooh the pain, cant wait for your girl to have the kittens, take loads of pics will u
Be careful, cats are notoriuous for dissapearing off having there kittens, and brining them home once they are big enough to carry, that happened to an old moggy of ours.
Anything else you want to know?
Best wishes |

I agree with everything Luke says but must say I don't believe in the whiskey on the tongue, could be quite harmful in my opinion. Ask your vet
For a non-starter a good vigerous rub in a towel and a swing upwards and down should sort it out. |

well Anne the last time we had kittens in the house was probably about 9 years ago, the vets had different opinions to what they do now, although i have seen it work on a persian cross litter we had 2 non starters in and one came back to us due to this, although a little drowsy which is why it can make things worse sometimes
