Post subject: Why does my cat keep peeing everywhere?
I've had my two cats (Poppy and Daisy) for just over a year now and we got them when they were 8 weeks old. They were litter trained when we got them and we used to use that grey litter but I really didn't like that because it smelt so bad so I changed it to the woodchip litter. Unfortunately, I didn't realise that you had to gradually get them used to the new litter so Daisy (I never caught Poppy) started to pee behind the television. Then we started to let them out and then Daisy would go outside and when she came in, would instantly run into the hallway and pee there, it was almost as if it was an excitement thing. I caught her doing this and smacked her (although I have since learned that this isn't the best way to punish your cat because they can often seek revenge). Needless to say, she carried on peeing around the house, but then all of a sudden it stopped. They have a cat flap and we used to only let them out in the day, and at night they would be locked in the house with a litter tray. The problem is that one or both of them keeps deciding to pee elsewhere! So we went on holiday for 2 weeks and my sister came round to feed them everyday and when I came home, the house absolutely reeked of cat pee! So we decided that we have to let them out of a night. But one or both of them is still peeing around the house and I am at the end of my tether! If I didn't love them so much, I would definitely get rid of them because they are driving me crazy. My house stinks, they pee on my clothes if I leave them lying around, but then all of a sudden it will just stop but this has been going on too long now. How can I sort this problem out? I don't think that they have a urine infection because they don't seem to have any problems going. The only thing I'm thinking is could it be a territory battle? They used to get on really well but now they don't seem as close so I'm wondering is it them marking their territory around the house? Any ideas on how I can stop this?
