Post subject: Rabbits eye Reply with quote

I've just got my rabbit in from the garden and noticed the state of one of his eyes. It is runny and has a lump, it looks quite sore but doesn't seem to bother him. He had his myxomatosis jab on Monday, could this be a reaction? I'm not really sure whats caused it and I don't know what to do about it. My parents won't let him see a vet until Monday as otherwise the bills will be high but i'm worried about him. He is eating fine but I think he may be blind in the affected eye, can't be sure though. Could someone advise me?
Also my cat has just been fixed up from an eye abcess after a fight and we still have his leftover eyedrops. My parents want me to use them on the rabbit but i'm not sure its a good idea.
Thankyou
Caz

Well your parents sound a bit relaxed about everything!

Can you gently clean bunnys eyes with damp cotton wool - wipe from the inside out and clean away any discharge.

This will feel more comfortable. Do not use eye drops dispensed for the cat on the rabbit - this is very dangerous as they may be harmful to the rabbit. Rabbits and cats are very different. If your bunny is in pain/suffering it needs to go to the vet asap - I realise its expensive but when we have animals as pets we have to be responsible and if they are ill we have to get them treated at the time before the problem worsens.

Its unlikely to berelated to the Myxi jab but could be a number of things.

If your parents are worried about the cost they may want to think about insurance for your bunny. I hope you get things sorted. Best of luck

I've just had a thought - ooh ouch! When my Ollie Bunny had eye trouble it turned out it was the start of trouble with his teeth. Turned out he had an abcess. Sad

I was going to suggest the same thing as Jabbro, could well be his teeth.

It could also be a reaction to the jab, although its more common with vhd. So long as hes eating ok I wouldn't be too worried, although if his eye continues to run I'd have him taken back to a good bunny vet and have his teeth checked. Is his diet mainly hay or pelleted/mix food?

Thanks for all advice. Ive cleaned it up a little, he still seems the same today but my mum has agreed to take me down to open surgery at the vets tomorrow night to get his eye seen to. They arent normally this tight but weve been to the vets about five times in the past month and its getting very costly. His diet is just about everything, he gets hay, dry rabbit mix, fresh salad and carrots and rabbit treats, as well as the odd apple and his carrot juice (when i first got him he wasn't drinking so I bought him carrot flavouring from the pet shop to try and convince him and he loved it so much he has two bottles, one water and one carrot juice). His eye doesn't seem to be painful but he doesn't react to anything near the eye so I do think his sight may be affected, hopefully the vet will be able to fix him up, im off on holiday in three weeks and im leaving him in a rabbit boarding centre (nobody wants to look after him, everyone has him once then refuses to ever have him again), I really want him better before I go because i'm not gonna leave him with strangers if he's ill!

Just to update, I took my rabbit to the vets this evening. The vet says that the iris has come out and that he is going to need an operation so they've kept him in overnight and they'll operate tonight, this could result in blindness or loss of the eye. Ive left them my number and they saids they'd call me tomorrow and let me know if he's ok

Bramble is home safe and sound. The operation went well and his eye seems to be doing nicely. He was casterated as well so he isn't in a great mood but he's alive and healthy so i'm happy. His iris had popped out through the eye and needed putting back in and then to be stitched up. Thankyou all for any advice, I'm really grateful to know that even though u don't know him, u care about my bunny and your here to help. xxx
