I was thinking of having Ebony spayed 3 months after next season. After thinking hard i was wondering if it might be better to have her done sooner or later. Ebony is 14 months old, it has been 3 months since her last season. She suffered from a Phantom pregnancy after her last season and she still has enlarged nipples and someday still produces a little milk.
My feelings are that she should be at least 18months before spaying, giving her time to grow up, but after her having a phantom pregnancy this time i dont know wether to bite the bullet and have her done now.
Is it likely that Ebony will suffer another phantom after her next season, and is it ok to have her spayed while she is having a phantom pregnancy. ____________ Love Denise, Ebony, Brodie, Eddie Jake, Chloe the cats ( Rosie, Pepsi, Libby and Misty) xxx

I'm not the vet nurse Denise, but in my own personal experience, once my bitches start to have phantoms....they always had them...and they got worse.
What is your thinking behind leaving her until she is 18 months old?
With each season they have, it increases their chances of mammary tumours (especially if they produce unwanted milk my vet told me) and you have the chance of pyometra too.
I had Mojo done asap after her first season....my sis had her bitch done at 8 months before her first season (she has a stud dog at home so didn't want to risk it) and they are both fine....They both grew to the right size (I know there are rumours of it affecting their growth) and neither of them are incontinent (another rumoured outcome).

my thinking behind the 18 month rule is give her chance to devolp and mature.....i was told once that it best to let the dog be at least 18 months so the have all the correct hormones they need and have chance to mature. I was also told and it has stuck with me ever since that you would give a little girl a hysterectomy so why do it to your dog....am i being silly? ____________ Love Denise, Ebony, Brodie, Eddie Jake, Chloe the cats ( Rosie, Pepsi, Libby and Misty) xxx

I don't think you're being silly, you're trying to do the best for your dog. I was told that if you spay a bitch while she is having a phantom she will be in permenant phantom mode so I think it best to make sure your bitch is completely over her phantom before spaying.

No you're not being silly at all....you are listening to all the advise out there and weighing up your options.
I don't speak from a medical background, only from the experience of having mostly bitches in the family. I just did a quick head count and we have had (or still have) 13 bitches within my immediate close family, some of these were left entire, most were spayed after their first season, one was spayed at ten years old and one has been spayed before her seasons started. Of the entire ones and the one spayed late, they all developed mammary tumours. The ones spayed early never suffered from tumours, they grew as they should and they matured nicely.
All Guide Dogs and Assistance dogs are spayed after their first season, except if they are going to use them to breed from and they don't seem to have any problems with them staying puppyish.
No, I wouldn't give a little girl a hysterectomy....but then we aren't talking about little girls are we. ____________ Jules and the Ark

Yes, it would be sensible to let her phantom clear and her hormones settle, or you could end up with a very miserable girl on your hands.
When I had Mojo spayed she hadn't had a phantom (the only girl of mine not to have one) but a few days after her op she started to fill with milk. By the time she had her stitches out she had very swollen mammary glands and was leaking a little milk. This was to do with the drop in hormones after her ovaries were removed and it didn't last long (no more than a couple of weeks) and she was soon back to normal. So don't panic if this does happen....apparently it is quite rare....but hey if it can happen to my dog, it can happen to anyones. ____________ Jules and the Ark
