 Having raised a Westie for past 12 years with little or no health problems, now find necessary to seek treatment for stomach/bowel upsets. Am appalled at the vet fees - 4 visits totalling £220! (Average fee £55) Latest for £79 for 20 antibiotic pills!
Is this the norm or am I being ripped off? God help the pet-owning pensioner depending on the State pension......

Vets fees are certainly steep - mine charges £22 just for a consultancy if there is no treatment at all.
Ruby is only 16 months so I have a zero excess policy which means I can claim every penny thank god.

I would say that is fairly normal...infact you may have even got off lightly.
My vets charge £26 just for the consultation.
If you are worried, then maybe they can give you a breakdown of the bill. Mine do as a matter of course now.

My vet charges £23 per consultation, but as we take Kippa a lot because of her atrhiritis and as long as the visit is related to that, we get a 25% discount................
Thank goodness for insurance

ohhh, i count myself lucky then my vet only cahrges £17, lol and although a brill vet i still have a moan at that, we are lucky though our vet is super value on preventative treatment such as neutering and vaccines

......and thats another thing - I've been with PetPlan for 12 years and never had need to use it. I currently pay £300 (because she is over 10) with excess of £110+20%!!! so none of these treatment visits are covered. Thanks to all for your input - I notice quite a few of you have multiple pets to care for so I dont know how you cope with the costs.

Exactly! You are all being ripped off in the UK because pet insurance has made vets very greedy with gross overcharging and unnecessary treatments. I lived there for 48 years and watched the situation develop.
Pet insurance is rare in Ireland, consequently the vets are incredibly cheap by comparision. For example, consultation €9 (yes 9 EURO about a fiver) you don't need an appointment and there is never much of a queue. My own vet told me that it was a well known fact that UK vets have decided that here is an easy way to make big money. As for the insurance companies - I work for one, their profits are massive too. And guess who's paying .......

| i am lucky compared to most people because my vet charges just £14 per consultations, and sometimes they dont charge me for them, because after me cat was put on record as blind i took him for a consultation so they could c how he was gettin on and check him over and they didnt charge me anything. |

hey this is nothing I was charged £567 for a consultation and a few tests on my pomeraian to find out why all his hair dropped out He was only at the vets for 3 hours. It was a specialist though. I nearly fainted as I was told that the consultation ws £105 then any treatment would be extra NOT THAT MUCH EXTRA!!!!!!!! Found out that he has alopecia X and it cant be cured  |

I had a go some time ago about costs for vet consultations and treatment and the cost of insurance. In the pet cancer forum I reported how our Westie succumbed to cancer after unsuccessful surgery for the tumor in her stomach. The surgery was in June costing £1300 = E&L Insurance received and acknowledged the claim mid-June subsequently confirming they would settle for £644 (dont ask - read the fine print!) It is now near the end of September and we still await settlement.
I dont know how you all manage with insurance settlements or whether this sort of treatment is standard in the industry but a little publicity might well alert other pet owners and help them decide which insurance company to opt for.  |

my mums boyfriend is on benefits due to being ill and he gets all his vetting free he takes Rosie to the vet and Buttonz. All he has to do is put in a donation. I always paid for Calvin's vetting bills though it was £18 for them to see us.

I must be very lucky! when we first had diesel we had to take him to the vets as he had very bad kennel cough, while we was there the vet noticed that he had a bad infection in his gums. For 2 weeks worth of tablets, some cleaning fluid for his gums and consultation on top our bill only came to £34! 
Also it only cost me £17.50 to get my cat neutered!

hi
that is incredale clarabella !!!
my vets cost a fortune but they were brill over gypsie they said that i could pay every thing in installments and her care cost hundreds and we still lost her.
to have my ferret castrated it was £48 !!!!
even putting poor gypsie to sleep in the end was over £70 !!!
and a trip to check your dog over is £40 vacsinations are £40 somthing pounds - no wounder so many animals dont get the care they need !!!
i read some where that only 20% of dogs are wormed regularaly ,only 30% are vacsinated and only 3% of all animals go to the vets just for a check up !!! but then whn it costs £30 for a consultation its not suprising!!
