WOW! guys, you need to learn loads more.
haha...tortoises are still legal to buy, providing you have some sort of papers.
they are harder than years ago!

years ago you could just keep em in a box with some veggie and during winter you hibernate it, then summer let it roam the house and garden!

and could take em from wild...and not get done.

Nowadays...[year 1999-200] you need papers for the tortoise, no need to sign em Laughing you need a table top enclosure or over 5 foot rabbit cage [NOT hutch] Razz and now most tortoises can only eat weeds with little veggies!

and need uv lights, baskin lights, heating pads, and so on.
Exclamation can be a pain in the buttocks Embarassed BUT you cant help but love the critters! my tortoise jerry [[4 inch female]] is sick with MBD and something else, but these are not my fault, she was sick from day one. Pet shops are bad to buy from..as theyre wild caught tortoises...and the shops give bad and wrong care sheets out.

Best you buy from breeeeeders. you find breeders give you right care info, healthy tortoise and stuff.

ok i got off bad start, jerry is in a tank still and no rabbit cage to be seen btu she will SOON. So yea. but i didnt help her metabolic bone disease by not using anything better than a tank. but she is doing good.

and your answer to do they make great pets...is

YES they do, theyre great. they have such humor and personality in them its amazing. they climb, dig, go in silly strops if you accidently give them something they dont want..or if you change something they like. they love to run away from you and try and eat your plants....

some females are just lazy and sleep...and some females love to get a good chat out of you.

Males are odd...they hump things, and often snort at you. but theyre cool.
You do get happy males and females but they do great.
lovely pets i gotta say!

if you want one for ease of care, adn stuff...go for Horsefield [russian] or hermanns tortoise or greek tortoise.
these main three are very sweet.
nice marked shells.

Mine are Testudo hermanni.B [hermanns]
