Doggy business

my border collie is 5 months old and we are having problems. When we take her for a walk she wont do her business while out, she waits until we get back and goes in our garden to do her business, why is this? if you could give some advice that would be great. thanks

Hi ThLambs, I have a 2yr old greyhound. It's as much as i can do to get her to go for a wee while we are out. Number 2's she always saves until she gets home. I don't see it as being a problem, I'd rather clear it up from the garden than carry a poop bag about with me. Smile

Ruby is the same - she very very rarely goes while out unless she is offlead in the forest - ditto what Jabbro said I prefer clearing from the garden than from the high street Confused

I have the opposite problem with my 2 girls, they will not go in the garden unless absolutely desparate (that could be after 14 hours!) so that's why they have to go out for a walk at least 3 - 4 times a day!

My dog uses both equally and yup, I'd agree that it's easier to pick up poo from the garden than it is the park , especially when you have to carry around a stinky bag all day...

Edit: But if your reeaally set on having your dog poop outside, try teaching them by saying a phrase to them whenever they poop. For example, we have taught our dog to poo when we say the word 'squat', by saying it to her everytime she poos. Also, if your dog does poop outside, try rewarding her and give her a treat.

well one goes back and forward to the door one waits, while on a walk one does it every so often and one does it once/twice. certain dogs are different like that or something i believe

Must be a bit like us humans i suppose as a i know a lot of us wont use public toilets or a friends toilet unless desperate and will wait until they are home.

I had a Collie cross like your Collie....It was about 2 years before she plucked up the courage to do her "business" anywhere other than my garden....I even took her out all day once to try to break to habit, but she managed to hold it all day Wink

. She did grow out of it though, as her general confidence grew. Very Happy

I think that Collies are just very sensitive, which is why they can be a little quirky at times. Wink

Our little dog poppy wouldnt go loo when out for walks when we first got her,she would always wait until she got back home. It was the same when we went to my parents house,wouldnt go in their garden and would always wait til we got home. Well now she goes anywhere,as for doodles he isnt fussed,as long as he can go somwhere he goes. When we bought him home after getting him from the kennels he did a poo in our dining room,but u could tell he was desperate to go.

Dont know if it might be because she is a bit nervous to do her business when she is out. Our young springer used to be a bit like that - there was too much going on whilst we were out and she would wait until we got home but now she is fine. We have new neighbours and when the children are playing in the garden she wont do her business in the garden cos she is wary of them.
