i've noticed that my bluefront amazon Kathy, was losing weight. but eating good. vet said she had (via gram stain of poop) 2 different yeast infections, and possibly PDD (PPDS ?) but untill she gains weight and is ove the infections she can't say for sure without a biopsy of her crop and perivintriculous... had her hoem as of yseterday 1 week, and she dosen't look like she's gained any weitht. can this be so? I read online that this PDD can be observed via a bird being given barium and then xrayed. so why does the vet i had to take her too say there's no other way to test for this diesease only the biopsy. please help me . i can't to let her just die and "make her comfortable for the rest of her days, not to mention isolate her for the rest of her days is she does have it" said vet. |

Hi there Shorty, I'm so sorry to hear that your Amazon Parrot is poorly I have a Yellow Fronted Amazon, great little parrots! Please don't be too hasty in putting her to sleep, could it be that your vet just doesn't know much about birds? Many vets over here in the UK don't get much training in bird illnesses, so if that is the case in the USA the best thing to do would be to find a specialist Avian vet, who I'm sure will have more treatment options.
(Littlelab, is it ok for me to put a link up for Shorty to a specialised bird site I have found very helpful? I was going to Pm you and ask but can't work out how to do it ) ____________ Georgia, Honey Bear, Rosie, Obi, Timber, Mia, Oscar and Mango XXXX

I am very sorry to hear about your parrot.
To make a decision such as this should be done by following your vets advice - if you are still unsure seek another opinion from an avian vet.
I think placing a poll on Pet Chat for members to vote on an animals life is a terrible thing to do and I do think the poll should be removed by the admin team.
I do sympathise with your position but making informed decisions for your pets welfare is what being a responsible/loving owner is all about.
Clockhouse Vets in Stroud has excellent avain specialists - you may want to contact them for info/advise.

Hi don't put her down! A biopsy is not a post mortem! A biopsy is where they take a small amount of tissue under anesthetic for examination and your vet probably wants her to be as fit and healthy as possible to survive the anesthetic. It would be too risky while she is underweight!

to all that's interested: I HAVE NO INTENTION OF JUST PUTTING KATHY "DOWN" I THINK IT'S CRUEL. BUT SHE'S (THE VET) IS SUPPOSED TO BE THE BEST IN FLORIDA. I WILL EAT SALTINE CRACKERS TO PAY TO HAVE HER WELL. THAT DOESN'T MATTER TO ME (COSTS). I JUST CAN'T JUST LET HER DIE, THAT'S WHY I TOOK HER TO THE VET.
her infections appear to be over, but she's still not gaining weight. i wish there was something natural i could get for her to stimulate her appetite before it's too late, if it isn't already? |

Hi there again Shorty.
I've put a link here to another website you might find helpful, it's all about PDD, and might give you some ideas for helping Kathy.
http://www.stoppdd.org/index.html
As for her appetite, what do you feed her already? I would say give her as fresh and natural a diet as possible. If her appetite isn't good, if she's anything like my Mango, she might accept things like pine nuts, sunflower seeds etc, though of course they're not all that healthy!
Just another thought, have you been weighing her to check for sure whether she's losing weight? it can be hard to tell just by looking.
Do you have any pictures of Kathy? Here's one of my Mango
Best Wishes, Georgia and Mango! XX ____________ Georgia, Honey Bear, Rosie, Obi, Timber, Mia, Oscar and Mango XXXX
