MEXICAN WALKING FISH
The Mexican Walking Fish is a most fascinating creature, looking and often acting, like miniature pre-historic monsters. They can grow to a size of up to 30cm. These animals are often kept as pets, in homes, all over the world and are extensively used for study as laboratory animals. A little known fact is that the natives of Mexico have used the roasted axolotol as food since pre-Aztec times.
Axolotols are the larval stage of a salamander, and are different from other amphibians in that they have the ability to reproduce while remaining a sexually mature lava. Walking fish come in grey/brown colour, an albino form (which has a white body and bright pink gills), a golden form, and a spotted pattern which is seldom seen.
The name walking fish refers to the animals habit of walking whilst under water. Walking fish should not be removed from the water and forced to crawl on land as they cannot breath out of water. Death would rapidly occur as would be expected with fish.
Axolotols are supposed to have the ability to undergo metamorphosis (Similar to a tadpole changing into a frog) and change to an air breathing, land dwelling salamander, but this very seldom occurs. It seems that most strains have now lost the ability to metamorphose... ____________ Vicky, Daisy and Ruby xx

| I wasnt sure of the spelling of Axolotol and they are otherwise known as mexican walking fish she does look a little freaky but surpisingly they do have characters of their own we have owned her for about 3 years we saved her from a cat so she has a few scares actually the picture above looks very much like her other than her gills not being so large she is still only a baby they can live up to about 100 years we used to look after the local kindergardens Axolotol called chief who was 80 years old he was a black one and a monster during the holidays, he sadly passed away a couple of years ago I was drawn to this site as I lived in the UK for 16 years before returning to NZ and as you can see we all love animals regards of what they are. I believe that animals and children are a good thing heres a picture of all of the cats asleep on our bed with my daughter they are Loki far left under the window in front of him is Lady adn co-co sadly the pure black cat Co-co and the grey cat Lady are no longer with us next to co-co is Rusty (ginger) and then my parsian Stevie-ray and then closest to the window is my Burmese Genere on the window sill playing peekaboo is Pumpkin |

Welcome to pet chat! I work at a "Super Science High School" in Japan (15-18 year olds) and the biology lab keeps salamanders just like those. Well, the larval Axolotol form. They research the salamander DNA. Giant salamanders are a "national treasure" in Japan, but they are endangered. I think their research gets sent to universities, somehow trying to conserve the giant salamander. The giant salamander is such a strange creature, they are sooooo big for amphibians! Some countries call them the Hellbender.
I dont know how to post pics so here is a link:

I also have two pet salamanders, they are very shy though, and obviously a lot smaller! Well, I call them salamanders as that's what I thought they were when I got them, I've recently found out that they are actually fire-belly newts |
