Hi, I wanted to get an opinion
My 14-year-old mixed doggy collie could not get up last week. She was lame on her back left leg. The vet said that she is not a candidate for surgery due to some arthritis issues in all of her other extremities. She limps on her front left foot. I hate to see her this way and was wondering if it will get better or is this the way she will always be?

my old collie had the same problem and she was old (10 years). our vet prescribed her some tablets but they were for life i cant remember what they were called now anyway within a few days we noticed a big difference in her walking and she was no longer in any pain.

on these tablets she lived happily to the age of 16. I dont think they were expensive either but saying that all vets are different. Confused

Hey there, one of phils (my oh) mums dogs went lame in one of her legs (cant remember which one) but i think that was due to arthritis, but she also had a sore on her foot. Unfortunately the dog still is lame from time to time, depending on if she has been running about alot in the garden, but still loves to go on her walks. And has her good and bad days. Im not saying your dog will get better but im im not saying she wont either. She could have her good days and her bad days. Did the vet recomend anything you could do for her,or any medication she could go on?

If it is arthritis, your vet really should be able to prescribe something to help.

Our last dog had arthritis, and it comes and goes a bit - would be ok for a while, and then it would flare up and be very painful for a while.

She was on tablets called "plt" for years, and they helped her a lot. She couldn't charge and jump about in the way she used to, but she was generally pain-free (though maybe a bit stiff on starting off) and kept active.

When the arthritis flared up and was really painful, she was prescribed steroids for a short while (which were actually exactly the same drug as my father was on at the time for his arthritis, except his had a sugar coating!).

All this was about 10 years ago, so types of medication etc might well have changed, but only for the better - surely?

Poor girl! From what you've said, it sounds as though she may have ruptured her cruciate ligament. Anti inflamatory pain killers (such as Rimadyl or Metacam) are likely to make her feel better, but must be used with caution in such an elderly girl, as they must not be used if she has any problems with her liver or kidneys.
The main thing that will help is rest, she will need to be kept very quiet, short lead walks only for a few weeks at least. If she isn't overweight, her lameness should improve in that time, if she is overweight, a diet will also help.
In the meantime, glucosamine and chondroitin or Green Lipped Mussel supplements will also help with general arthritis.
Good luck, I hope she's feeling better soon! XXX

Hi
My dog suffered from the same disease an effective and natural way to provide your pet with pain relief and improved mobility. Magnetic therapy dog collars are used to help conditions such as arthritis, rheumatoid diseases and hip displacia. I found the product at. www.healthmagnets.co.uk
Hope this helps you.
