Hi Georgia
Thanks for your input.
I'm afraid I hadn't heard of a third eyelid.
The eyes are not red or weepy maybe a little watery.
Some days like yesterday they weren't as bad.
The bit of tissue just comes up to the edge of the coloured pupil.
If I cut his food back a bit do you think it will disappear?
Can you tell me more about the 3rd eyelid please?

Sure, no problem. The third eyelid, also called the 'nictitating membrane' is an extra eyelid which in some species of animals can draw accross the eye to provide extra moisture and protection to the eye. They are commonly seen in poorly cats, owners will often ring the vets saying 'my cat seems to be gowing extra skin over it's eyes!' when in fact it's third eyelids are up. In some species, I think including Guinea Pigs, it doesn't really serve much of a function, though it can prolapse, called 'Cherry Eye' in dogs, this commonly affects dogs with flat faces like Bulldogs. This is usually only seen on one side at a time and is very pronounced.
It would be worth putting the piggy on a diet to see if losing weight helps, but if they eyes are at all sore or inflamed, a trip to the vet would be a good idea, it isn't worth taking risks where eyes are concerned, as they are so delicate.

Hi there
Sorry its been so long since I've got back to you but we've had probs with our computer.
Well guinea went to the vets - the vet had a long look with his eye instrument and said its nothing to worry about , he is fine and well.
That was a relief but to have no idea still what it was was a bit disappointing. He said if it got bigger or any other ailments with it to see a specialist (coliel before you open your mouith - don't say it!)
Thanks for your comments everyone I'll obviously keep an eye on it (no pun intended!)

I have just found out what my pig has.My friend found it in her book - its called fatty eye and is a swelling under the conjunctiva. There are no other symptoms and no cause for worry. But there is no cure and it is suggested not to breed from it (which I won't) as it is herditary.
