Did anybody read that story in the Daily Mail about the woman in California (where else? except she is talking about starting up in UK too) who has a business renting out dogs for a while to people who want a dog, but not all the time!! It was a news story in yesterday's paper (31 July - NOT 1 April, alas!) and then today there was an article responding to it. Thankfully pointing out how horrible an idea it is.
Her business is called Flexpetz, and people pay an initial joining fee, an annual fee, and then so much for every time they "rent" a dog.
It is supposed to be a caring and responsible way to enjoy a dog, if you don't have the time to look after one full-time. You rent the dog for the weekend, or whatever, and then return it to the kennels when you have finished with it - where it stays until the next "doglover" rents it out.
Not a word about the poor dog - after all, their greatest need is to be pack members, and the security that brings - never knowing who it belongs to, never knowing what the rules are because everybody will have different ones. And it living in the lap of luxury for a few days, pampered and petted, and then left in kennels for who knows how long?
And what about when it gets older and isn't just as cute looking, or able to run about as much? Or if it gets ill or has an accident?
How sick is that?

The above (assuming it works, cos I'm not very technically minded) is a link to the article today. I can't find a link to the news story yesterday, but this will tell you all you need to know. |

my goodness what a horrible idea. this woman obviously doesnt appreciate animals and their needs and desires. it could only happen in america, dont think it would take off here in england though. i cant see the rspca being pleased with that. surely it is classed as neglect as the dog has absolutely no stability and no-one to truly call their mum or dad, poor things. ____________ Where would I be without my Bubbles....? oh my god thats nearly as worse as skinning a dog alive.....
how can people do that to animals....it makes me feel s***...
if someone abuses a dog for years and years and the dog bites the man in defense the dog will get put down no question.
am just sick to death with these monsters, and with not been able to help the animals. ____________ Lisa Ianniello

We had this debate on another forum, there were mixed views on it, such as maybe people would be less likely to get a dog then dump it when it became inconevnient, its also a good way to find out if you have a suitabe lifestlye for a dog.
On the down side, dogs like to belong to a pack and have structure and rules, this would be hard I feel.
People would be better off to volunteer for dog walking at their local rescue centre ____________ Natalie and Co xxx
