Post subject: advice on new kitten. Reply with quote

hello

I have 2 kittens, both are from different litters.

first kitten (maisy) who I bought privately about 2 weeks ago, seems to be active, fit, eating wea little underweight maybe but nothing drastic
I have just recently wormed her, so hopefully she will start gaining weight, she is coming up to 8 weeks now.

mitzy who is also 8 weeks I bought from a pet shop, this being around 5 days ago.

I have noticed that her stools are always very loose with an awful smell. At first I thought this may be down to her only just being weaned. She is quite long haired, so you can imagine the mess she is getting her tail and bottom in, the litter seems to be just sticking all around . I am constantantly trying to catch her before she walks this mess around the house. Her fur has started to also get mangled. I know kittens can have these problems at first but the awful smell seems to be telling me something different.

any advice please.

I am worried also as I have a 2 year old daughter, who is always trying to pick her up.

thanks sharon

hi
No,I have not give any milk to her, not even a catmilk. I think the best thing is to get her checked out tomorrow. I feel so sorry for her. My other kitten seems so active compared to her. There is about a week difference in them both. The more active one, who is called maisy, really seems to mother her in a way and she is the younger one! It is so funny watching this, she grooms her and even covers up her mess in litter tray. I just feel that this poor kitty has not had it good somehow. Is it true that buying kittens from a pet shop is not a good idea? I have actually read this somewhere but dont know how true this is.

thanks for reply
sharon

Hi Sharon, and welcome.
I'm afraid your instincts are correct, it is a bad idea to buy cats or other animals from petshops. Unfortunately the animals sold in these places are often poorly bred, unsocialised, and they come with a host of problems, including worms, fleas and other parasites, congenital diseases and many other problems. A kitten from a breeder or rescue is a far safer prospect!
Anyway, now that you have Mitzy I would agree that it would be worth taking her to the vet today. In the meantime, I would just feed her a bland food like chicken or cooked fish, this may help settle her tummy.
I also wouldn't let your toddler handle her until she has seen the vet, just in case.
Best of luck at the vets, please let us know what they say

Hi Honeydlc

Thankyou for reply and advice given. Mitzy went to vets today. She was given antibiotic and as you said, I was told to keep her diet to boiled chicken etc so I got her some of the hills prescription diet to have until she starts getting better, will then have to slowly wean her back onto her kitten food. I am going to give her hills kitten as her diet also I will wean my other little kitten onto this. I had been giving them whiskas kitten but was told this can sometimes be a little to rich for kittens. She was given an injection of antibiotic today, she gets another on friday, I found this easier, than trying to give her tablets myself. She has actually perked up alot since her visit to vet, so fingers crossed.

thankyou
sharon
