Had a fantastic morning today the blacksmith managed to get shoes on my horse - yipee!! I have only been waiting for around 7 months as his feet are poor and well that is an understatement!! I bet the weather turns really nasty and I can't get him doing something I should stop being so negative!

Anyway the blacksmith said his feet are really good, but I have changed nothing, he is out all the time rugged up with hay and 2 feeds a day and the same feed type he always gets, he is just torture for his feet being really poor. We have tried all the various supplements but they never work I just do not understand him, anyway at least he has 4 shoes on and can go out (after some work in the field)

I'm so happy really.

Angie

Oh that's good news, have you tried getting in touch with Dorwest herbs or Ainsworths to see if they can help?

Angie, the reason your horses feet have improved is more than likely due to the fact he hasn't been wearing any shoes. Wink

When a horse wears shoes there is very little pressure on the frog and the sole of the hoof and this is very unnatural. By removing the shoes he is in a more natural state and the blood supply to the growing parts of his hooves would have been much greater, therefore creating a better growth.

Sometimes if you massage the coronet band it helps to increase the blood flow also...so maybe now he is shod it would be a good idea to do this for a few mins everyday (or whenever you can) just to help keep his hooves strong. I used to use Cornucrescine to rub into the coronet band too as my fella had very brittle hooves when shod.

I have tried cornucrescine in the past but really did not help much, and a lot of different supplements over the years as Ash is 15 this year and have had him since he was 6 months. He did have good feet until about 3ish but was not broken until he was 6 and only got shoes on after that! The hi-fibre feed does help - I will try the cornucrescine again just to see if it helps, along with the blacksmith every 6 weeks!

I have to work out how to get the pics from my phone onto here so you can see him and the rest of the gang.

Good luck....It's rotten if you have a horse with poor feet.....The old saying "no hoof, no horse" is so true. Rolling Eyes

Do you keep over reach boots on him??? As I know I'd just get my Lads feet right, when he would rip off a newly placed shoe and take half of his hoof with him......Anyone would think he did it on purpose. Rolling Eyes Laughing

Get on and enjoy him while his feet are good, eh. Wink
