Post subject: Rats tails Reply with quote

My Rat girls have really dirty tails, I have bathed them and used really mild baby soap, but they are still dirty, any ideas on how to clean them. Also I have levels in the cage and they keep weeing on them as well as using the toilet it really stinks! so much so I have taken them away and using branches which actually keeps their claws nice and short! How do I stop them weeing on the plastic levels. Rolling Eyes

Their tails are grubby, they were lovely and clean when I first bought them home, Im just wondering if its because I have them on newspaper and the print is coming off, so perhaps a should try something else. They have a toilet which I use wood based pellets, I dont really want to use that all over the cage, can you recommend anything?

THANX

hiyaz.

Iv kept rats for 11yrs now. At the moment i have 4 boys.

I know what you mean about the tails. they always end up like
that. I havent found a way to get them clean again like when i first
had them.
The rats iv had in the past have been really good and on went to the
toilet at the bottom but these 4 are dirty lil buggers and go anywhere in
there including the levels.
I dont really think theres much you can do. Just give their levels a quick
wipe over everyday. Thats what i do. But thats all i can suggest really.
Sorry.

Oh and as for the newspaper i would suggest removing it because
the print dos come off and will make your girls even grubbier.
Dont use saw dust/wood shavings because the dust from it will iritate
their sinusses. (sorry cant spell)
I use shedded up paper. Stick everything through the shedder. Nice and
cheap too.

Hope ive helped at least a little bit.

Thanks for your ideas, I have taken them off newspaper and put them on litter for now they dont seem to have messed on it but kept to their toilet, we shall see how long that lasts! I have tried the baby wipes they didnt like them and tried to eat them! then when I put them back in the cage they had a wrestling match, thankfully not for too long and they cuddled up in their nest!
I think they didnt recognise each others smell!

Thanks again
Rachael
