| Post subject: pet shop horror!! |

hi
as you all know we have desided on getting gerbils so today we set out to the 3 petshops where i live to get some, i had looked in the yellow peges and also in the internet but as we dont drive and their were non near by we walked in to town - we have got 2 to find out about them its on rodent chat.
how ever the first petshop was a garden center and only sold rabbits and guiny pigs these were seperated by sex and the rabbits and guinys shared their pen - their pen was just a small area with a sprinkling of wood shavings dry food and water - their was no fresh food or a bed of any description and when i asked do they not like an inclosed dark place they can sleep in or get away from shoppers, he replyed that they probably would but its best not to so that all the people can see them all the time!!!
on to the next petshop which had only the one gerbil in a glass tank with wood shaving just coating the floor nothing to make a bed with nothing to chew and all alone! i asked why it was on its own and couldnt you only buy in pairs and sell in pairs so that gerbils always had a mate but he said some people like to only have the one gerbil . i asked how old the gerbil was and he said he hadnt got a clue!!!
i asked if their was a book that contained when an animal comes in to the shop and he said that their is but no body fills it in !!
i couldnt believe that bothe these petshops cared more for people buying them than actualy the animals them selvs
the last petshop was much better and the animals all had nice clean plases to live wth lots of intresting things to do in them the gerbils were also only sold in pairs!!! - my idear in the last shop!!
the funny thing is that because they had such nice plases to live they seemed so much happier and we ended up buying this chew block that they seemed to like, a straw nest that represents a burrow and tunnels that they enjoyed climbing over and of course 2 gerbils.
so if the other shops put their animals in a desent home with things to play with etc they would end up with a much bigger sale!
i just feel so sory for the other gerbil all on its own , if i new the gerbil was only a few weeks old i would buy it too and put it in with our new gerbils but i just cant risk it. poor little thing!
so now i completely understand why some people hate the idea of buying from a pet shop i realy am one of them now !!
even at the good pet shop they didnt sugest any thing about their care or even suggesting i buy the same food as they had been eating, and when i asked which one they replyed any thing that comes in dammaged !
so that is my experiance of buying a couple of gerbils absolutly diobolical!!!

If you are unhappy at the way petshops keep their animals you can contact the local council who licence them or the RSPCA

| Some petshops are awful, i run a society thats trying to change how they treat their animals. fingers crossed we will make a difference, check my homepage link for the web address of our site. you might be able to help in some way. |

awww poor animals.  I only know of one decent pet shop near me. The others are awful.

i dont think what they do is bad enough for the rspca to do any thing as their basic needs were met but i just thought how horrable and un animal friendly they were it wouldnt hert to just have them ina desent cage with things to do and a proper bed space away from all the shop noise etc
i know people on here were saying that rabits and guinys shouldnt share but is that a law? probably not and the same goes to giving fresh good etc |

In Oban (please dont ask unless you really want to know) they are 2 petshop sometimes 1 sells hamsters and has birds and fish, the birds arnt for sale usally, the fish are for sale.
the other one dont sell pets of any kind
