Hello all! My name is Linda and i currently live with 3 cats and a dog.
I am a freelance artist and i am looking to start breeding animals and exotics in the next few years.
I will be breeding Ferrets, Rabbits, Rats, rare breeds of dogs and the more exotic animals will be Sugar Gliders and i am currently looking into rescuing Fennec Foxes and Skunks which seem to be getting more popular in the UK.
Any information on Fennec Foxes or Skunks or any info on any places in the UK that sell them as pets would be greatly appreciated.
Thankyou all. |

hi
welcome to petchat !!!
you are very brave intending to breed so many diffrent types of animal !!!
do you plan to breed for any purpose and why such a huge veriety?
althuogh i know you have only just joined and i dont mean to have a go at you andalthough i do love ferrets can i ask why on earth you intnd on breeding them !!!!
their are tons of babys out their allready you only have to go to a country fair and their are lots you can buy , most ferreters breed to keep their own stocks up and give any surpless away to other ferreters or people intrested in keeping them .
i cant see much point in breeding them for the sake of it.

Unfortunatley where i live there arent a lot of country fair or gatherings of such for animals such as ferrets and the population of ferrets here is close to none.
I am looking into breeding purely for buisness and love of animals. I obviously wont be breeding them all at once and constantly.
Ferrets have a breeding patern of about once a year between march and august (or around that).
Sugar gliders will breed more each year with a partner and there is a huge want for sugar gliders and not a lot of breeders. No breeders means that the animals get shipped or sent over a long distance which can cause A LOT of stress and discomfort for this animal and can put them through a nasty depression which can sometimes kill them. Especially when they are by themselves. Also there are a lot of people who commit themsleves to being the owner of these lovely little things but dont do a lot of research into the animals themselves and how to look after them properly.
This usually results in a bad diet or unsuitable environment and even investing in a single sugie which again can cause a nasty depression as they need to be in good sugie company to be really happy.
I will be studying the little fluff balls and writing a book to help understand the sugies and give other people more of an opportunity to know 100% what they are getting into and what they really need to supply for the sugies in order for them to be happy and healthy little lovelys.
Breeding is not something i am obviously taking lightly and i do not intend on breeding ANY animals unless there are homes for them to go to.
Otherwise they will all be companions of mine and will be populating my simple life with there love and companionship.
I intend on rescueing more than i will be breeding probably (or that is how i see its progress) but again, i would not breed any animal unless people have requested and the animals will have suitable homes to go to.
I will be going about this very proffesionally and my heart will be in it all the way. |

hi
i must admit i feel better too !!!
i honestly imagined this dredful barn that had all these poor animals in cages breeding and selling them with no love or understanding !!!
i still feel that if you wanted to get a ferret you could easily but you would have to look into them and find some where that is willing to give you a couple !
i think the majority of ferrets in rescue are bought in these country fairs with out any real thought !
i hope you do rescue a ferret and change it into a lovely friendly pet!

Oh yes yes of course! I wouldnt dream of doing anything like that!! I am a GREAT lover of animals and i would never be able to do anything like that!
And regarding the ferrets, i will be rescueing them first as i havnt had a chance to own them yet and i have done plenty research and have visited them many times in our closest rspca who have quite a few who are very willing to have us adopt them. |

Hi Linda
could i just ask if you have any experience with sugar gliders? They need a lot of looking after and if their diet isnt right it can be fatal. They have to be unrelated pairs and there are quite a few sugar gliders out there at the moment for sale, I appreciate that they are quite costly to buy but there may be a few people that buy they because the look cute and are not really aware of the attention they need.
Having read your posts, i can see that you are an animal lover its just that having them i know they take a look of attention and if you have a number of animals that may not be possible.
I do wish you the very best of luck with everything tho and please let me know how it goes.

hi
mmm i think - i dont know - but i think what lindaluvsanilmas is planning to do is learn about lotts of breeds over time by talking to people , visiting rescue centers etc and then do some rescuing and breeding of her own and wright books on what she has learnt to enable people to realy know what they are getting involved in.
im also assuming she plans to breed and have these animals at diffrent times and ranging over years , as i dont think any one could do a good job in breeding and learning about a spieces while doing the same with anouther 10 diffrent breeds or even 3 !!!
i must admit i did worry about her intensions my self how ever now i think sheis planning to help animals rather than hinder them.
im not keen on breeding for the sake of it but i have friends who breed ferrets well because they only breed when they want ferrets them selves.
and i also have a friend who breeds lasaapsos (my spelling is auful!!)
but she does that because she shows them her self is obsesed with the breed and likes to keep her line of well thought of dogs going. both of these breeders are good responsable people who always take back any animal that is no longer wanted they also both vet the homes care fully.
how ever i do think lindaluvsanimals would be better off sticking to one breed but it is up to her if she feels competent to gather info n lotts of varied breeds.
