| I've realised that there's no one posting about ferrets and i am a fanatic about them. Unfortunately i dont own any yet (not allowed them yet) but i have been doing a lot of research into them and visiting them at the rspca. Would like to talk to any ferret owners. |

i havnt owned ferrets yet no, but have been looking into them for a long time now and have been doing a lot of research on their behaviour and the best way to care and look after them. We've been to an RSPCA to look at them and handle them and generally ask questions a few times and we have fallen in love with them.
I cant wait to get them. They will be the most spoilt things ever!
I dont know if you will be able to answer this or not but.......are there such things as black ferrets?
Just ferrets with a solid black coat?
My partner and i talk about when we get ferrets a lot and we wondered if there were black ferrets so we could get one to call Ninja! |

Ive never seen black ferrets if you do i would think youd be very lucky.
Just brown, salt and pepper, cream type.
Cause there a relation to weasel and stoat they are brown with a white, cream front

Hi i've got ferrets . You can't get pure black ones but you can get polecats that have black legs and dark/light brown body.
The main colours are polecat, sandy (light brown and normally a little white), albino, and silver. If you would like i can post pics of my guys to show the colours properly.
http://mercia41.ipbhost.com is a brilliant ferret specific forum with very friendly people with lots of info to share so if your a first time owner it might be a good idea to join
(I'm not sure if we're allowed to advertise other forums on here but since theres not a lot of ferret chat/info on here hopefully it will be ok, if not can someone please delete it ) ____________ Kayleigh and all the little terrors

That is an adorable picture!
I havnt owned any ferrets yet no but i have been looking into it whoile heartedly (and a little addictively) for over seven months now.
I intend to get rescued ferrets first as, though i have done plenty of research and preperation and have visited them on many occasions, i havnt had the 'living with ferrets' experience. But my god am i looking forward to it!!!
I am not going to start breeding any animals for a long time yet. I am doing it for buisness purposes really because it is what i love more than anything.
Of course i will be owning the animals i wish to breed first when i am able and the situation is suitable, to study them and really know the ins and outs and how they think. And hopefully write a couple of books on the different animals.
I guess i am doing it more for the fact that i LOVE animals so so much.
(so much easier to get on with than humans)
Im still not sure if i would like to be breeding ferrets or rescueing them yet as i have seen there are a lot of ferrets that need good homes.
I am aware of the ferret population currently but as i have already said, they seem to be more of the 'need a good home' population. And rescued ferrets tend to be neutured and spayed before you are able to adopt them.
All ferret population talk put aside, what is more beautiful than bringing such a pure and beautiful life to the earth to share the love of such a wonderful creature with others....
This is not a hobby i will be taking up lightly. I have been doing all the research and future preperation to understand and make sure i am compoletely 100% sure that i am able to do this. I have been visiting breeders, rescuers and vetenarians. |

I really hope you decide not to breed ferrets as like you know there are literally hundreds in rescues i've adopted nine ferrets from a rescue over the past 4 years ranging from a couple of months to 4 years and they really deserve to be rehomed rather than someone getting ferrets from a breeder instead who's creating more ferrets to earn a living .
Also if you intend to breed then it may not be a good idea to join the forum i posted as it's run by a rescue .
Although i do hope you get a couple as pets as they are brilliant little guys, but be warned there addictive i had a limit of 1 then 3 then 6 and somehow i've now got 8 i don't know what went wrong . ____________ Kayleigh and all the little terrors

Wow! Yes there are a lot to be rescued but not all are very friendly. But hopefully after a little rehabilitation i can have them more comfortable and friendly with people and have them adopted. As i said i am still not sure if breeding is what i wish to do with ferrets. Though i will deffinately be owning them as pets and will most probably be the crazy ferret lady after adopting many in just a few years too.
I cant wait! I am so looking forward to it.
Do you have any other pets other that ferrets and do they get on with each other?
We have three cats at the moment and we know that they wouldnt really be bothered about ferrets as they are either too old and lazy, too mothering and would adopt them and lazy, and too skitsy and ould probably try to love them like kittens. |

Yep i've got other pets, one is a yorkshire terrier he's met all the ferrets through the bars as they all try to bite him apart from one who i trust not to bite the dog so they sometimes play together in the garden. My cat ignores them but when he was alot younger (i had my first ferret 8 years ago) he'd run up to the ferret then stop just before reaching her i'm not too sure what he thought he was doing . One of the ferts has met my rats through the bars and was quite keen to get closer (it's natural prey afterall) They've never met my chinchilla but i'm sure they's be more than willing to eat her and they've also never met the tortoise i'm also sure they'd bite his head of and the fish are kept safe in there tanks.
I have to be carefull what other animals my guys meet/get close to as they are fed a prey model diet and so are happy to eat most meats even when coverd in fur but even when not fed meat they still have a strong instinct to kill small furry things. ____________ Kayleigh and all the little terrors

Hehehe. Yes understandable. I have a yorkshire terrier too called spike. but i dont know how he would react to them as they are natural ratters and though im sure they would give him a run for his money and he would probably run away, i wouldnt want to put the dog or the ferrets under any stress.
A chinchilla you say? What are they like as pets? I was looking at them ages ago but i am someone who wants an animal who wants to be cuddled and played with. |

yeah my yorkie didn't meet a loose ferret until after about 2 years of meeting through bars.
Chins are definatly not cuddly in my experience maybe it's because mine is under 8 months still but she'd much rather run around the room jumping on boxes and falling into bins she tries to balance on the rim of it but always ends up falling in thankfully it's always a soft landing as it's full of bits of fabric (that reminds me, ferrets love hammocks i now make these myself but a few pet shops sell them for stupid prices).
Also if you hold Chins too much their fur goes really greasy and if they wriggle abit to get down and you don't let them they release their fur in clumps so chin can escape and your left with a load of fluff which isn't good for them or you. ____________ Kayleigh and all the little terrors
