I recently visited a man who had some ferrets for sale. i was disgusted at the way they were kept. i must admit i did take one but she was very young adn could heal from some love and affection from my friend.
The ferrets i saw were only fed on cat food which as all ferret lover know is very insufficient and they need a porper diet. AND if that is all you feed your ferrets on you must be a very carless owner.
Anyway these ferrets had the longest nails i ahd seen and it made it very difficult for them to walk, they were also lacking in the proper amount of protein and vitamins that they needed.
there was also another very very unusaul hob, he had the most beautiful colours but was very very unhappy and very lazy. I obviously reported this person to the rspca and they were all taken from him.
I couldnt believe the state that they were kept in and am on the lookout for others like it as i am still looking for another healthy happy ferret

that is absolutly horrible!!!

Why are people so irasponsible for animals? theres no excuse.
if your gong to have any animal you make sure you know how
to keep them and people that dont shouldnt ever be allowed them.

Well done for ringing the RSPCA. If only there were more people
that would do the same thn maybe there be less neglected animals.

hi
i am suprised the rspca took them away normaly they give you warnings etc - i know this because i tried to help some animals in the past and the rspca just wrote to them !!!
as for the cat food - actualy alot of people do use it as it is high in protien and is recomended in alot of books especialy the amarican ones ( although the amarican ones can be complete rubish any way !!)
i feed my ferrets on franky ferret or jwb ferret food but i do give them cat food ocasionaly as a treat .
lotts of the old time ferreters feed them on bread and milk !!!
that is dredful much worse than cat food but they all seem fine on it.
the nails are a shame , the thing i hate mostly is when i see ferrets in tiny rabbit huches or with filthy homes - ferrets are realy clean but they poo loads so you need to clean them out ever day - i have litter trays to make it easyer but i have seen ferrets in conditions where their is poo every where !!! mostly because the idiot who owns them is too scared to put his hands in and clean them out but even then the rspca does nothing and i have seen this type of cruelty country fares!!!
so well done for getting somthing done !!!

the thing is these days you can actually buy ferrit food
as you see it in pet shops.

When my parents had theirs (going back 24years now) they
didnt have the ferrit food you can get now an they had to feed
theirs with baby chicks (dead ones obversly).

There really isnt much excuse anymore because the net is full
of info these days and everyone has access to it.

hi
that is true but like dog food just because its their dosent mean its that good!!!
my ferrets do have jwb ferret food but they also have the odd dead animal , eggs, cat food , etc to give them a full ballenced diet.
i know lotts of people who dont use ferret food not because they dont care but because they do care!!
obviosly this wasnt the case in this situation as the animals must of been treated realy badly to of been taken away.

im not sayn that the ferrit food is all good dont get me wrong
but the internet can tell you alternatives. So there really isnt
any excuse to not look after animals propery if you do your
research.
I researched on the net for 2months before i got my lizard
so i knew he was getting what he needed ect.

I feed my rats on rat pellits but thats not everything i give them
they have fresh fruit and veg ect.

but just to keep them on cat food isnt good for them. their not
cats at the end of the day. There isnt much excuse for not giving
any pet a proper diet as theres too much info to get hold of. So i
dont really understand why animals get neglected and that because
you can find out hw to look after animals so easy now.

Well done for reporting the owners of the ferrets Very Happy
When I used to have ferrets I fed them JWB ferret food, and the odd bit of cat food etc. TBH if I had one now I'd feed it raw like the dogs.
I think the reason some people mistreat their animals isn't ignorance, but laziness.

yeah i put a bit of cat food in with their ferret food, but i wouldnt dream of feeding them cat food and nothing alse. my breeder told me what to give them and i trust him as he has many happy healthy ferrets. mine get the odd bit of cat milk which is ok as a treat. but no meat yet as they are still very young and willmost likely take a likeing to my fingers and i dont really want chewed fingers.

Cat food is NOT recommended by any good realiable source in the uk as it is too low in protein (generally) for them to live on long term (i've been told american cat food is generally higher in protein so isn't so bad). When i fed commercial food to my ferrets they had a small pouch of high life cat food mixed with dry cat food about once every 2 weeks shared between at least 6 ferrets this was just a treat for them and so didn't effect their diet as a whole too much.
I now feed raw and would never go back to a commercial diet for them as they are so much healthier, better teeth, coat, energy etc and after researching for well over a year all the junk i've found to be in commercial food is awful.

A tad off topic, but you may want to look up the shunamite diet as commerical rat pellets generally aren't good enough for rats. Wink

I feed my dog raw, and if I had ferrets, I'd certainly feed them raw, carnivores aren't meant to eat kibble with bits and bobs of animals and hydrogenated oil etc in it, but thats just my opinion. Wink

hi
i agree that ferrets should eat meat but they need the whole animal which is difficult to obtain all the time and chicks are not good enough as they havent got enough meat.
ferrets also need to eat constantly and leaving a huge great pigs head in their all day will atract flyes and their fore maggots!!!!
i feed jwb dry for munching on and dead animal either rabbits, pheasents etc we have shot or fresh road kill i also give cat food and porrage.
as for the cat food being higher in protien in america i dont think this is true (acording to my sister who lived their for a while )
canned cat food in this country shows protien % as a whole where by amaricans show it once water as been taken off - for example 1 tin of meat may have 15 % protien , 80 % water , 5 % carbs now if you take the water away which is not the nutrisional need for the cat then you have 75 % protien and 25% carbs.
dont get me wrong i dont think it is good to feed cat food but i dont think it should be a reasen to take ferrets away from some one !!!
obviosly it must of been some thing far more serius!!!!

id feel so sorry for your ferrets if you kept them. they would be so un healthy and if i saw them i would definatelt find a way of making sure you changed your ways or take them off you.
