What do you all think of Cesar Millan aka “The Dog Whisperer”.
The woman who I might be getting my Basset Hound from recommended this book from Cesar called “Be The Pack Leader” I told her what happened with Calvin how he grew up in our house etc and she said I should read this book. I was just wanting a second opinion on the guy and if any of you can recommend any good books for training puppies/dogs and how to make my family and I the boss.
I already have “Dog Training For Dummies” and “Its Me Or The Dog” and I have a few books on Basset Hounds.
Thanks for your help

If he ever did a UK special (I wish!) I would be one of the first in line to ask for help with my doggie Fred... He's fine until "walkies" and sees other dogs and also beforehand when I get his lead out the cupboard, when people come to the house, and also when I bath and dry him.. its getting kinda old, kinda fast with him...
I watch The Dog Whisperer on Sky Three at 6pm and sometimes 7pm at weekends (I'm that sad, I know it has a weekend show lol) and I think he's a genius with those dogs! I wouldn't doubt him with my dog or anyone else's dog, I know they'd be in the best hands, the man knows his stuff! |

I've not seen many of his TV shows but I've just finished reading his book 'Cesar's way'. I thought it was very good, he puts alot of emphasis on not treating your dog like a small furry person, and on firm but fair training. From what I've seen of the TV shows he has an amazing way with dogs, they just seem to trust him.
Another good puppy book is 'The Perfect puppy' by Gwen Bailey.
Good luck with your puppy, I'm very jealous, I love Bassets!

I strongly disagree with his harsh methods and his ideas on 'pack dominance' has been disproved by several well known behaviourists, such as Peter Neville. Theres been further advancements made on dog training and dogs don't look to their owners to lead them, and his way of training only creates dogs which are fearful. He uses choke chains and other violent forms of 'training' to get dogs to do as he wants. Hes a dictator and I see his methods as totally unneccessary.
Dogs behave in a certain way to get attention, love or food and hierarchy only comes into play when you have another dog. If you introduce another dog into the household wouldn't you agree they act differently to when another person comes into the house? Dogs see dogs as dogs and humans as humans.
These are only my opinions, believe what you like, but I honestly think Millian is a total idiot, and if he tired his methods on anything other than a dog they'd be outrage and I wouldn't let him anywhere near my dog! Hannah respects us and is a well loved dog who has been taught without ever using a choker or any form of harsh treatment. |

i agree with alot of things that cesar does but dont agree with the prong collars at all.i know i use a chain on kia an she responds well to it not because she is being hurt all the time but because she learnt long ago that if you pull it will hurt both her and me she is a big strong dog and could do some damage both to me and her if she pulls.
i totaly respect you twig for saying what you you think and not caring what ways everybody else follows
just a question......why are you getting another dog??? isnt this the 3rd dog in the last year or so,u got rid of the other 2 because it didnt work out, what has changed? what is going to make it work this time???? ____________ My goal in life is to be as good of a person as my dog already thinks I am!

i agree with hev_gsd. if you ave a dog then it is your dog for life.
my dog turned aggressive and it was hard work but the thought never came into my head that i would get rid of her and replace her with another dog.
dogs are not toys and can not just be replaced when bored or faced with a difficult problem.
i agree with alot of cesers methods as they have helped me to control my collie and she is now leading a healthy happy life and goin further in er obedience shows than i ever thought she would.
dont know what i would do without ceser |

I got my copy of his book from amazon.co.uk, as I said I haven't seen much of the TV program, but the book doesn't suggest any prong collars or physical punishment, but emphasised mutual respect and firm but fair training. I'm not defending his training methods on the TV but there is nothing harmul or cruel in the book that I read.

Ive watched it once and its so weird how he changes the dogs behaviour so well. Like the one when there is a dog that ripped any other animal to shreds and he changed it to sit right next to a guinea pig. ____________ Frankie, Bindi, Buddy, Jack Baeur, Peter Pan, Ruffty Tuffty, Sox, Dexter,Tiger, Vilmaris, Run free at rainbow bridge Sunny, Betty, Flint and Jack Bauer

| Its not just the cruel things I disagree with, its his whole ideology. I was talking about this with someone who was a behaviourist and they converted my views on the heirarchy thing, and it just makes more sense. My dog would never allow another animal in her territory, be it cat or dog, but when we had builders etc around the back her tail didn't stop wagging and she nearly tore the door down to greet them. Its pretty clear she differiantes between humans and dogs. |
