Post subject: Depressed mouse? Reply with quote

One of my mice just died (as seen in the Rainbow Bridge section)...and my other is incredibly depressed.

Getting another mouse is kinda out of the question as Kenny is a full year old, so getting a new one now will mean that when Kenny dies - we'll have to get another new mouse for the new one, and so the cycle will continue.

Not to mention that as a full grown male, it might be difficult to get him to accept a newbie (regardless of gender, but especially since it'll be another male due to not wanting babies).

So, buying another aside - anyone have any ideas on what I can do to help him get through his grief?

I'm thinking about getting him one of those cat-toy mice that're real fur (I know, fur is bad) for him to cuddle with at night and stuff. And we're keeping him nearby and talking to him but leaving him alone for the most part unless he comes out and such.

I've never had cagemates before, so I don't really know what I'm supposed to be doing here.

Nearly all of my rodents have had cage mates and at the sad times that one has gone to heaven i just always made sure i spent that little bit more time handling them so that they didnt feel lonely.

You could add more toys in the cage so that he has more things to occupy himself with aswell as i found that worked well for many of my pets.

There has been times that i have been able to introduce a new friend or two to some of my animals but like you say it's difficult with male mice. I used to have 2 and in the end i had to seperate them as they kept fighting so it's nice that your mice got on so well.

Hope some of this helps Wink

Thank you, it does help Smile

He's been chattering his teeth a lot since yesterday afternoon. Like, it almost sounds like he's eating something, but he's not.

All I could find online about chattering teeth was the he may be cold. Makes sense, I guess, since he's used to snugglin'. Any other thoughts on what might be going on? I added extra kleenex and a little bedding fluff (even though I've read it's not great for them, my guys always loved it and never had problems with it) so he's got at least something soft in there to help fill the void and keep him warm. I've also got a flannel sheet, folded to 4 layers, up over one side of the cage.

Poor little guy Sad

awww bless him. Sometimes one of my females does that ( usualy when she has been kicked out of the group as she is rather naughty lol).

I can't think what else it could be to be honest. You are doing well by him so try not to worry to much. Just give him lot's of TLC and im sure he will be fine Wink

Yeah, it wasn't the same as the chattering when snuggling with Squints or playing etc...it was a different sort of chatter, and he was doing it when he was sitting alone in his house and I wasn't within view or anything...

HOWEVER, he's stopped the chattering completely, and is coming out of his house a lot more now. And when he's out to play with us he'll actually snuggle up inside my shirt, or in my boyfriend's sweater pocket and lay down and nap - which he would NEVER have done before...he used to be running around nonstop and trying to find a way to escape.

I finally picked up a fur cat-toy mouse yesterday, as I was able to find one that's a dark gray just a little lighter than Squints' colour was, and that was also about the same size as Squints was. He seems to enjoy it - he sat right beside it last night and ate food for a good half hour, and was climbing on top of it when I put it back in the cage today.

He's dirty looking, though haha. Kenny's a bit on the heavy side, and can't groom himself properly without Squints to get the hard spots..so he's shabby and kinda greasy looking - but that's really just a superficial problem at this point, so if that's the worst of his issues now after the loss of his brother - I'm a happy camper!
