Meet Roland:
He is a one year old Black Hooded neutered male. He was rescued from an elderly man who had 33 other rats as well as 4 rabbits, 3 gerbils and 2 guinea pigs. He was unable to cope with that amount of animals. The ammonia build up was horrendous because he could not clean the animals out properly and instead swept the muck out onto his floor where it built up over a period of time. Environmental health went in and told him he had to get rid of his animals by the 8th March or they would all be put to sleep. With the help of rescues and foster carers all of the animals were placed. Roland was the only rat of that rescue with a name.
Roland was a lone male, kept by himself because he was aggressive towards other males. His aggression was solved by neutering, which the National Fancy Rats Club rescue fund kindly agreed to pay for. Roland is now living with me and will enjoy a forever with my two girls. At the moment I am going through the process of introducitons with them. They are all ok with each other in the bathroom which is neutral territory, but my bedroom, which they all think they own, has resulted in a few disputes, nothing serious at all. Just waiting for them to decide who is Alpha!
So hopefully in a few weeks time they will have all settled down and will be enjoying each other's company and living in harmony...that's the plan! Aside from introductions, he has settled in well and is a big softy. he has his moody moments but he's quite content to sit on my lap and watch tv for half an hour, and also willing to play chasing games. His walk is a mixture of slow waddling and sudden bunny hops! All in all, he's lovely, just hoping he settles with the girls. |

Awww he is gorgeous I hope the introduction process continues to go well, Archie and Reggie are the same, they are good in the bathroom but in the bedroom they have the odd scuffle but neither are neutered so i may go down that route aswell

Todays intros:
All the rats were keen to meet each other again...Kitty and Roland still not sorted out who is boss yet, but the process may take 2-3 weeks and its only been 3 days. Maya (submissive of the two females) was squeaking to show submission to Roland and they were both showing aggression towards each other. (puffed up fur, pawing and bum-barging from Roland). No scraps between Kitty and Roland though, more sniffing this time and more of Kitty trying to stand on his head lol. I'm hoping she will come out on top as I know she will be a good leader. I'm Roland would be too but as I don't know him well I'm not sure how he would treat my girls.
But all chugging along in rat land. Just wish Maya would stop being silly and squeaking at Roland all the time! I'm sure that doesn't help! |

Just an idea but what about pushing thier cages together? With my chinchillas to start off with i put thier cages together ( leave a tiny gap in between each cage though, about a 1cm or so to prevent them from biting eachothers feet). That way they get to smell eachother and interact all day when you are not there and get used to seeing eachother.
It sounds as though they are doing well anyway though ____________

Actually, funny you should say that, today I did put thier cages near each other. (just wanted to give Roland a chance to settle in before I made him meet the girls) Most of the time they are fine, but Maya does sit next to where his cage is and just squeak at him! But she has the option of going up to escape from the sight of him a level or two as thier cage is about 4 times taller than his temporary dwelling! She's quite defensive in her insecure, submissive frame of mind I think. Most of the time Roland looks at them as if to say "what on Earth are these crazy girls doing to me?!" But mostly he just chills out in his hammock, typical buck! But when he's out of the cage he's actually quite skitty and playful for a buck, and also doesn't mind sitting on your lap for a while. He's such a lovely rattie!
The only worry I have about thier cages being so close is that although they can't get to each other through the bars, thier tails do occasionally poke through and I wouldn't tail injuries! |

Thats a good point, sorry i didn't think about thier tails as my chinchillas have fat ones so they don't stick through the bars
It sounds like your having fun with them! And i bet within the next few weeks they will all be the best of friends ____________
