Post subject: Deaf kitten that bites!!!! Reply with quote

Hi all

I adopted an adorable white kitten 3 weeks ago and have since found out he is deaf. This is not a problem but in the last 2 weeks or so he has started biting and scratching anytime we touch him. As he is deaf he cant hear us say no when he does it!!!

I have heard that getting another kitten would help but im really not sure?

Any suggestions?

hey im sorry to hear your kitten is deaf, maybe you could get a mini water pistol and if your kitten does something u dont like squirt him with that to show him you dont like it, but being a kitten hes probably only playing so a another kitten would probably be great as he will learn not to bite so hard as the other kitten will show in body language thats he/shes upset, also as your kitten will have to stay in the rest of its life another cat would make him so much happier, but its whether you think its cruel to confine two cats so id say its up to u as others will probably say a cat has a much better life being able to go out.

i have a blind cat and i regurly take him out on a lead so maybe you can train yours to on a lead while hes still young.

He could be just playing, i had a male kitten that would jump all over my arm and bite my hands every time i sat down. He also used to wait until i was awake in the morning and when i was going down the stairs he would wrap his paws round my foot, hang on and bite my toes. It was amusing to start off with but then became annoying.

I ended up getting him a friend which calmed him down as he would spend all day playing with the other kitten.

If you do get another though it would be best to have your kitten vaccinated first and make sure the other one is just to ensure that illnesses dont get caught Wink

Good luck with whatever you decide and i hope your kitty calms down for you Very Happy

There are whistles available that even supposedly deaf animals can hear. My Ex has a deaf border collie pup and the whistle stops it in its tracks so could be worth looking into.

I had a deaf cat that attacked because he got spooked as he couldn't hear you approaching him. Try always approaching in eye shot. Make eye contact / use a lace / laser pen etc to attract the cats attention and then make sure that it can see you hands before you try and touch it. Your taking the surprise element away and hopefully won't get bitten.

Another cat is worth a try - perhaps you should look at an older rescue cat that has had kittens her self who would mother and teach this kitten and act as a mentor.

Good luck whatever you decide X

I think getting him a friend is a good idea, but I think the main reason he bites is probably because he gets a scare when you come up behind him. Because he's deaf he's probably a little paranoid and he may feel uncomfortble because he can't hear someone coming up behind him. I would make sure that he can see you and you make some sort of eye contact so that he knows you are there. Good luck - it will hopefully get better over time
