Post subject: Dog with red skin? Reply with quote

Hi, I'm Claire & this is my first post here, hopefully someone will be able to point me in the right direction with my problem!

I've got 2 'furkids' - 2 male Shih Tzu's. The oldest one, who's 8, has developed very red skin on his underside, particularly his 'arm pits' over the last couple of weeks. It doesn't seem to bother him, it's not weeping, flaky or sore, just very red.
He's got very thin hair (result of cancer 7 years ago) so I thought it maybe sun burn or similar but it's on the underside.
Is this something I should see the vet about? Confused

It may be an allergy to something, but it's best to get it checked out by the vet I would have thought Smile

Does your dog go into the garden alone ? If so, it might be sunburn if he sunbathes on his back.

One of my dogs is a sunworshiper, and she has red armpits and belly area. I keep slapping suntan lotion on her .... but still she gets red. She wont lie in the shade, no matter how much i try Rolling Eyes

Sorry for being the one to say this - BUT if your dog has fleas the excrament from these and doggy saliva will be red on the fur and this will show most in areas like armpits, bottom of tail etc. Might be worth checking and remember that if it is fleas (all dogs get them!) then rememberto worm your dog as well as the tw go hand in hand.

Get a vet to check to be sure .

Thanks for the replies. Took Toby to the vets this morning. Their first thought was Cushing's Disease Shocked but as he is only showing a few symptoms they are not to concerned. They're treating him for a skin infection, which involves creams, antibiotics and a funky little cone over his head for the forseeable future!
They also picked up he had an ear infection which was completely unknown to us - more pills and drops. We came home almost £200 worse off but he's worth it!
The vet called him a hardy little fella!

Awww, well done for taking him to the vet's quickly - it's always better to be safe than sorry. I'm sure the 200 will be worth it in the long term, as it could have developed into something more serious. Hope he's ok. Very Happy
