Post subject: New to this site and need some help with my cat. Reply with quote

Hi all,

I have a 2 year old cat called Archie, he has been living with us at my parents where he has been an outdoor cat and loving every minute! We have just moved and i have been told it is best to keep him in for at least 2 weeks, so far this is no bit problem - But, although he is having no problems with using his litter tray (which is always cleaned out straight away) for a wee, he has taken to scratching up the carpet and doing No 2's in corners. He has even tried getting in a plant pot and doing it there! I have tried all sorts, i have even made a big litter try and put soil in it to remind him of where he used to go. Does anyone have any suggestions or help? Also he is used to being shut in the kitchen at night but since the move he just cries out all night and we are finding it really hard not to let him out and up with us. One thing i should point out is that at my parents he was living with an older boy cat, they did get on very well and i wonder if i should get him a friend? So sorry for going on so much, just really need some help.
Thanks

Is there a reason you have to lock him up at night? If not then just let him in with you, he's probably scared in a new place. I cant think of anything t suggest for the litter, but you could try getting him a cat lead and taking him outside ever so often, he might just not like going indoors and will go if you take him outside. My eldest hates litter trays and when we moved just didnt go for days, so we took him out on a lead and he went then, once the 2 weeks is up you'll have no problems.
Good luck

Thanks for your reply,
The main reason we shut him in the kitchen is because we tried letting him come up with us and he is fine until about 3am then he feels the need to wake us up to play! He seemed to have a good night last night without making to much noise so i think we may of cracked that! I got home last night to find a little pile on the bathroom matt so we still have that problem! He is trying non stop to get outside bless him, it makes me feel terrible, do you know if it is really necessary to keep them in for 2 weeks?
Thanks so much for your help

When we last moved house we only kept ours in a week because they were going bananas to get outside. They were fine.
I think if you let them out early make sure you do it on a day when your at home, and you can let him out, then every 10 mins for the first hour call him back and give him a treat. Then make it every 20 mins for an hour, then every 30 mins. Then call him back every hour that first day.
That will make sure he doesnt go far and each time he goes further and further he comes back and knows the way. I did this with mine when we moved and they were all fine.
Good luck
Em

Hi,
Good plan! I spoke to some friends who said the same, cant wait ot let him out, he will be so much happier. Oh and i got home last night and he is using his specially adapted litter tray now and also being quiet at night - all is going well!
Thanks so much for your help, really grateful.
