Post subject: Rat Ball? Reply with quote

Has anyone ever used one of those free run plastic balls for rats? I want to give Kitty and Maya a bit of freedom as the only rat proof rooms are my bedroom and the bathroom so that's all they get to see and think they are getting of those scenes! And I can't rat proof the whole house, the downstairs is completely open plan so I'd never see them again! So, a ball seems to be the only solution but I'm not sure they will take to it, they don't like being in confined spaces....what do you think? Worth a go? (they are £10-15 or something stupid so I don't want to spend money for nothing he he)

The balls are not suitable for rats and there is much debate as to whether they are suitable for hamsters, so please don't use them, if you want to let them explore somewhere new, use a harness for unproofed rooms. Wink

I wasn't sure you see, I thought they would be a bit scary for such small animals. The clear ones seen ok, but ive seen some which are heavily tinted and one hemisphere of the ball is a solid colour!!! I wouldnt but one of those, poor things won't be able see!

As for a harness, it did cross my mind but my girls are really small and the harnesses I've seen would be far too loose! They are so wriggly, I doubt I would be able to put the harness on them!

Oh well, I will have to continue making things for them climb on and play with.

I would never stick any of my rats in a ball. I hate them.
Wouldnt even stick a hamster in one.

Its not really giving them any freedom anyway because their
still locked up but in a even smaller space than their cage.

I have a rat harness but they arent really any good. Mine hate
it and they can wriggle out of it.

Those balls CAN be used for rats and I do have one for when I had my other rats but they were really scared of it so I never used it with them.

My rats usually get the run of wherever I put them down as long as doors to the outside and rooms I don't want them to go into are shut. If you don't have anywhere safe for them to come out and run around in, then I wouldn't bother unless you can rat proof everywhere you don't want them to go. Or you could make a sort of run for them indoors. Just out of boxes, wire mesh and wood, thats if you're good with your hands which I'm not so let mine run wherever I put them then have to go find them lmao Razz
