Post subject: Advice please - question for breeders Reply with quote

Hello folks

My dog cassy had her pups (eight) four weeks ago now , she stopped feeding them 2 days ago and the pups are all eating the puppy food now and doing great.

Cassy was full of milk when she stopped feeding them and now this milk has all gone semi hard , well the consistency of say soft jelly , is this the norm and will the "swelling" gradually go down

Shes eating well and does not look or is she showing any discomfort at this time

Or am i just a overly worried dad Laughing

Cheers

I was thinking the same about mastitus, I'm no expert but I assumed pups still drank some milk after 4 weeks and were only fully weaned around 6-8 weeks. If they've stopped drinking then mastitus is possible. Definetly phone your vet and get advice Very Happy

Hi,
If left to wean pups natrely then the pups will feed less and less untll eventualy not at all .
If this has not happened and for some reasen the pups have stopped feeing all of a sudden then mastitis is often a problem and some times needs antybiotics but oftn can be treated with plenty of fluids - Water , Water and more Water !! Also if you fil a hot water bottel with warm water wrap it in a towl and lay it on the mother dogs tummy area where the swelling in the teets is then this can greatly help with the discumfort.
I hope she is feeling better.
love Coliel
