Some friends have recently moved to Ireland and until they had built the aviary, I let them use my shed for their budgies and lovebirds. After a couple of days of me feeding them, the owner came every day to do it. When the time came for her to collect them, she told me she had lost one of the love birds but had expected it.
It's now a few weeks later and I went into the shed for something yesterday and noticed that one of her cages was still there. Shock horror! A stiff little bird corpse in the bottom of the cage, together with about an inch of mould and other growths. I felt sick and could not imagine why she had done this.
I rang her and told her just what I thought and today, she came round to collect the remains. She went into the shed, came out and asked me if I was wearing my glasses when I saw the dead bird. "No," I answered, wondering what what coming next.
Apparently it was a toy! She thought the plumage was unusually brightly coloured!
She did admit to forgetting about the spare cage though

Unfortunately I can't even blame that as I am teetotal.
