Post subject: Weird lump Reply with quote

I was wondering if anyone can help. My cat has developed a little lump on his head. It seems to hurt him if anyone touches it and it has been leaking foul smelling greenish puss. Earlier on I spotted a tick in it but the tick just ran out so it wasn't actually in the skin. Anybody have any advice on what I should do or what it is?

Hiya, how big is the lump? It actually sounds like an abcess the way you describe it. Ticks don't usually move on an animal except to drop off, is there anyway what you saw could have been a flea?
I would take him to the vets tomorrow in case he needs antibiotics.

Hi Sweetieangel

Definately sounds like an abcess, these can be caused by cats getting into scraps etc. You need to bathe it with salt water and if you have some savlon pop some of that on it and then take straight to the vets for some antibiotics first thing tomorrow. The foul smelling pus is a sign of infection.

The other thing it could be would be a cyst, usually affecting older cats. I would pop him along to the vets tomorrow to check it, as it is painful.

My Mum and brother took the matter into their own hands while I was at school, my poor kitty. My brother held the cat down while my mum chopped the matted fur and dead skin then used a q-tip to clean away the puss. The puss kept coming until the lump shrunk and now its a scab. Ive gotta hand it to them it seems to have cleaned up nicely, however I do have to emphasis here that I don't agree with the way they hadnled it, they could have made matters alot worse, I had such a go at them when I got in, my lil kitty was terrorfied and all nervous, he's barely left my side since I got home , bless him

He's gone, I think my mum and brother scared him away. I gave everyone strict instructions to keep him in for the night to keep his wound clean but no...my dad let him out yesterday evening and he didn't come back as of yet

Oh Dear, poor kitty Sad He probably just got a bit of a scare and decided to lay low for a while! Hope he's back soon.

After 48 hours Sylvester has reappeared! He came through the window earlier on. His lump has healed nicely but he was rather hungry and wet bless him!

This could be an abcess or an infected sebaceous cyst or a few other things.

I would bathe the area in warm salt water.

Keep a close watch on it the area though as it may well re-appear.

If such things are not properly treated by a vet - ie removal of all necrotic material/antibiotics - they usually return.

If it returns please take kitty to the vets.
