I had hermit crabs in my marine tanks. I had the full marine set up and fed them dead fish and left a variety of shells in the tank for them. Are you talking about marine hermit crabs which live mainly in the water or a different type that live on land?

Then I suggest you talk to someone who knows about them as to what is required. It will depend on the species as to what set up is required. If they are tropical marine then you will need a very expensive set up!

I looked in to getting hermit crabs a while ago, land ones. They were not marine ones and they did not have any water. The set up up in the pet shop was as follows:
They had fine gravel at the botton, a shallow, wide water dish, a variety of different sized shells to choose from for when they want to change, a sort of climbing frame thing (I assume an arrangement of sticks and the like would do the same job and look more natural!) and they had green vegetables to eat. I think they had a rock to hide behind too. They also had some kind of calcium supplement, but I can't remember if this was something added to their water, sprinkled on thier food or a cuttlefish...and I think websites I looked at suggested feeding them things like shrimp and small fish and cabbage for some reason.
However, I chose to get a pair of firebelly newts instead! Equally easy to care for, though you can't handle the newts. |
