Help! My black bear hamster has escaped and it seems like I've tried EVERYTHING but I've had no luck. It's been about 4 days. I've tried:
- Bucket traps
- Putting out tinfoil to hear his footsteps
- Putting out a counted no. of sunflower seeds
- Putting out water, food, carrots (just in case he gets hungry/thirsty)
- Leaving his cage open on the floor with fresh food, water, treats, bedding
- Looking EVERYWHERE.
* in all the closets and cabinets (behind/inside everything, even high up)
* under/in/behind couches, beds, chairs, tables, desks, etc.
* under and behind appliances
* behind the water heater
* under sinks, bathtubs, etc.
He hasn't touched anything I've left out, I can't hear him at night, and I haven't found any hammy poop. Is this fairly normal for an escaped hamster? I'm really starting to freak out. This is my first hamster and he's only a baby.
A related warning to other would-be hamster owners: don't purchase the Crittertrail X cages. They're easily opened by a little escapist, as I found out too late. |

My dad sealed up most of the holes in the house, even the ones that aren't required by building code. The only way for him to be in the floors is if he chewed his way in somewhere, and we've found no chew marks on anything. There are two holes in our walls that are still unsealed though. One leads to the water heater, which I've checked already, and the other leads UNDER the house. I really hope he didn't get under there, because there's snakes, and the only way to check would be to literally start taking the house apart. |

To be honest I can't suggest anything other than searching at night time when he'd be awake, however if he hasn't touched any of his food it does sound like hes ventured out of the house.
Sadly crittertrail are very poor cages and many syrians (black bears are really just black syrians) do escape from them, plus there are too small and hard to clean. Really the minimum sized age for a hammy is a 20 gallon tank/bin cage.
Hope you find your hamster, good luck! |

Hi there,have u found your hammy yet? Oh i must have a black bear hammy (as he is a black syrian),saying that as he has got a bit older he has lightened up a bit.
Out of all the cages i have had throughout the years for my hammys i have found rotastak have always worked for me,i dont like the look of the crittertrail ones. Saying that my hammy did escape not so long ago,coz when i cleaned him our i didnt connect his tubing properly again so he got out
Hope you find him soon |

I've heard of this technique:
Before you go to bed, put say, ten sunflower seeds in every room in the house and close the doors and windows, then you can see which room he is. But, like you said, he hasnt eaten anything yet. Worth another try though!
Have you thought about renting a humane trap? You could load it with his favourite food and some old bedding so it smells like home. I'm not sure where you would get one from, google it i guess, or contact your environment agency and they might be able to help out.
I hope you find him soon!
(do you or a friend have a dog? maybe it could sniff the hammy out!) |

I wish I could be of more help, but most all my ideas have either already been tried by you, or been mentioned by others.
I'd just keep leaving a small bowl (or like,a jar lid etc) out with water and some food and keep an ear out at night.
Fingers crossed for you... |
