My three dogs are happy to allow other dogs into their territory, we had Obi's dad and sister here today and they all played happily together. They are also fine with people in the house, although they will bark when people knock on the door.
They do seem to have a loose hierarchy, but I do believe they see me as 'top dog' if you like. For example, if Obi is chewing a bone, he won't give it up to Honey or Rosie, but I can take it off him without complaint. Not that I take things he likes off him for no reason but if I need to he doesn't make a fuss. I believe that is because he (and the other dogs) respect me.
That I think is what Caesar Milan is trying to get at, respect has to work both ways, you don't want the dog to be browbeaten and 'dominated' into the ground but equally a dog needs to be able to behave in such a way that he can happily live with people and other animals, for his own wellbeing and safety.
I've never used any particular system with my dogs, in fact I think that some sound completely daft, like pretending to eat something out of your dog's bowl before you give him his dinner and ignoring him for 15 minutes everytime you come home (who could do that??), and as long as people use common sense, good training methods and are 'firm but fair' with their dogs, they shouldn't have a problem.

My dog allows me to remove her food or toys etc, but that doesn't mean its because she sees me as packleader, she has respect for me and knows its me who feeds her, fusses over her, plays with her and walks her in exciting places.
She doesn't attack other dogs or people as shes been well socialised and knows better.

Ive never watched the 'dog whisperer'. I always try to firm but fair with our dogs, like honeydic is with hers. And for us that has always worked with the exception of sparky However he has seemed to turn a corner,we dont know whats happened but he is improving, slowly but surely. He is a wonderful dog,but just needs time and attention

Can I point out that Ceaser Milan DOES NOT use Prong collars himself, but if the owner is using one continues its use but shows them the correct way of using it, this is to prevent confusion for the dog in the short term, and eventually he gets them to change to an ordinary collar.
As far as pack leadership theroy goes, I think the debate will forever run, until someone learms to actually speak canine or bark, we shall never know, I always say to people, stick with a method that works for you and your dog, as long as its not cruel, if you try to use too many techniques all it does is cause confusion for both you and your dog ____________ Natalie and Co xxx
