The age at which you should handle kittens varies with the condition of the kittens and the mother. Ideally, kittens are cared for by their mother. When momma cat is taking care of things you should not handle the kittens until they are at least 2 weeks old and then only under the mother cat's supervision. If the kittens are orphaned, you are now the mother and you need to care for them and feed them.
As to how to handle the kittens, hold them gently for only a 10-15 minutes at a time, and do so in the company of the mother since her presence reassures the kittens and the mother cat too (see Mother's Behavior for more). Remember that human children or houseold pets should not be left alone with small kittens.
The first 4-8 weeks of a kitten's life are very important. Handling and petting the kittens will make them more sociable creatures. At this age, be sure to leave them plenty of toys for them to play with (rolled tin foil and wads of paper work great). Avoid using your hands, fingers, feet or clothing when you play with them as this only encourages attack games which then leads to aggressive behavior.

i just thought people might be quicker than this, they are on other sites. Ones that dont relate to animals!!! Ha HA. you know what i mean!!
kittens are a week old and are opening their eyes!!!!

wasnt a surprise litter! she was huuuuggge!!!!
just dont no anythin bout kittens yet thats all.

Hi sorry not been on line for a while (I work weird hours so come and go!)
My latest kittens are now 12 weeks old - two were rehomed with Mum and I've kept three. Actually Mum wasn't actually mine I just kinda took her in as she in a bad way and her owner wasn't sure how to deal with her or the babies. My older "kittens" are now 17 months, 23 months, 35 months , 5 years and 9 years lol x
Aww if the kittens are opening their eyes start wearing thick trousers as they will find their paws very soon; and then they will find your legs and start climbing up them. I still have to wear long trousers as seeing the kittens leg climbing my 17 month olds have decided that it would be fun to start doing it again.
Back to thread:
Take Mum's lead re touching kittens. I kept Mum and babies in one room and started touching the kittens by petting Mum and then gently and slowly touching her brood. I took her lead and she let me know what was acceptable. After about 20 days Mum liked me playing with her babies whilst I fed her - it gave her a little bit of peace and quiet without them hanging off her tum.
As soon as Mum will let you, you need to pick up each litten and check them over physically but only when Mum will let you; don't try and do it too early or you risk her disowning them ot attacking you. Even the most docile cat will protect her babies.
Obvious really but just one thing, especialy if you have children as well, remember that kittens do have fleas and worms.... make sure that you wash your hands after handling them and treat them as soon as possible; about 12 weeks. There is nothing you can do about this but if a real problem try using a nit comb if the kittens will allow before using anything chemical on them and don't be tempted to use chemicals under the recommended age.
