Post subject: Two leveled Hutch? Would it be a good idea? Reply with quote

Hi all,
My Netherland Dwarf rabbit has outgrown is hutch and i am thinking of getting a hutch with two levels. The thing is the only room for the hutch is in the garden and on the grass, the question is do you reckon i should put something down so that he cant dig out when im not looking? He has really grown since i got him last September and i think he is a bit uncomfortable. thanks Bunny

What size is his current hutch?

He needs a minimum of a 5ft by 2ft hutch and access to ideally a 6ft by 4ft run.

Double layer hutches are not all that great, often the ramp takes up too much space so a single level hutch is probably better.

If hes on grass, you not only have to worry about him digging out but other animals digging in, so you have to ensure his run is fox proof whether or not you've seen foxes in your area. Chicken wire isn't fox proof, you need strong metal mesh, and that can be used along the bottom as well, although soon the grass will turn to mud, so unless you have a big lawn and are able to physically move the hutch every couple of days, you are better with a solid floor anyway. Wink

Hope that helps! Very Happy

thanks. Although i live on Jersey where there are no foxes i was always wanting to get a hutch with a strong metal instead of chicken wire as there are cats and polecats etc. I was thinking that if i were to get a two floored hutch i would have large woodchippings on the bottom or i could put some wood down or something. Also my hutch is smaller than 5ft 2
as my old guinea pig used to live in it. When i first got peter pan he was much smaller so he was alright in it. Also it has to go on the grass because the guinea pigs live on the top floor of my hutch and my rabbit lives on the bottom floor if u know what i mean

The hutch we are looking at is around £140 Smile

This is the type of thing i would like
