when pepsi saw the vet to have her her paw checked last tuesday he decided not to give her anymore antibiotics, but it looks a bit inflammed & a bit swollen & she is reluctant to put it down so it looks like she will have to go back to the vets, i can only assume that because she has a non existant immune system that it has flared up again, i feel miserable for her, she has to keep the plastic collar thing on so she cannot lick at it,it doesn't help that the weather is so awful & because she has go go out for a wee every half hour her paw is getting wet all the time , although i dry it carefully i'm sure it doesn't help matters bless her

hi clareabella, i've made an appointment at the vet's for tomorrow afternoon, i think it is not covered because germs can muliply under a dressing, because of moisture & body heat , but i will ask him tomorrow because it seems a vicious circle she drinks loads because of the medication and then pees more & so on , it is very difficult for her, i think the infection is back, also she has a bit of conjunctivitis as well she is under the weather, the problem will be if she cannot fight infections off, the treatment for the immune mediated illness is a double edged sword, she needs the medication to stay alive but then is open to infections even a minor infection could be fatal for her, anyway i will see what the vet says tomorrow,i want only to do the best thing for her, it is so very hard, we will have to see will let you know tomorrow thankyou for the support, its a comfort to know that you & others on pet chat are thinking of her , she still manages to wag her tail ! love from pepsixx

well, we have been to the vets today, been a long day, pepsi, knew where she was going when we put her in the car,she was alittle distressed when we got there, the vet examined her paw first , i pointed out that one oof the the pads was weeping a bit , he cut away some hairs to get a better look and said that she has a hole in her pad, he thought she may have a foreign body such as a grass seed in it, so much to my horror he got a pair of forceps and was probing in the hole but could not find anything, poor pepsi it must have hurt but she was very good & put up with it, he then flushed it out with saline, he was a little concerned but put her back on the antibiotics for two weeks, he said that the antibiotics should her with her upset tummy , & gave her some probiotics to put back some "friendly" bacteria back in her gut which should help to settle it down, he wasn't too concerned about the blood from her bottom as it was probably her over straining, i really thought i was going to lose her this week,as the vet said a simple infection can potentially be fatal to a dog with no immune system, but she has no option but to stay on the medication, she will have a further scan in 2 weeks & some blood tests to see if her blood count has risen & too see if her platelet count is high enough, i hope the antibiotics work, pepsi didn't want anything much to eat today but i think she was very stressed, and her paw was very sore, she is having a good sleep now...
also if her paw does not heal the vet suggested that he may have to look at her paw under anaestetic to see what going on, i hope it won't come to that, i feel happier today , i know papsi is a fighter, for me it will allways be her quality of life that matters.. & the tail is still wagging bless her !
thankyou to clareabella & shadylady for your kind interest , support & best wishes lots of love from pepsi too ! xxxx

pepsi seems a lot brighter today and not as listless as she was last weekend, but having said that she can only take a few steps before getting tired, she has eaten better today and seems to have got over her ordeal at the vets, but she is putting her paw down a bit now so flushing it out seems to have helped, considering how sore it must have been yesterday she has done well, she has even done a bit of barking today, which is a good sign, i stll have reservations about her condition, i think her breathing is a bit laboured most of the time, the vet didn't listen to her heart or chest this time, i will mention it when she sees him in 2 weeks, only a few months ago she would have been first in line to go for her walkies, now she can only manage a few steps but i still have her for now.
when we have to take her to the vets we have to hire a car, as we don't have one at the moment ,so she knows exactly where she is going, when we put her in the car, so today before we took the car back we took her down to the beach, we live on the east coast, carried her accross the sand and we stayed for half an hour or so, she loves the sea. we took along our lurcher Lucy aged 12 an old lady now but pepsi's best friend, Lucy we adopted when she was 1 yr & when pepsi came to live with us at 6 weeks old Lucy mothered her she used to nestle into Lucy's tummy , they are very close. they haven't been on the beach for a while as it is too far for them to walk to now they are older,(lucy had 2 knee operations when she was 2 to repair cruciate ligaments ) so her legs arn't what they were, it was lovely to see them have a sniff and a little walkabout or carry in pepsi's case, the weather has been beautiful today, though i must admit i feel rather drained today. i will post a photo of pepsi & lucy on the beach xxxxxxxxx
