Post subject: why do cats purr Reply with quote

1. Why do cats purr?

Cats purr for many reasons other than contentment. They start purring at 6-8 days of age, as a signal to their mom that they are getting enough to eat, and are happy. Mom usually purrs back to let her kittens know she is happy too. Cats purr whenever they need to tell us something. They purr when being petted or loved. They purr when the feel pain, as a way of telling us. This includes when they are actually having kittens. Other theories include these reasons.

It increases the efficiency of the circulatory system, keeping them healthier.
Soft purring indicates a demand, while loud purring is a thank you. It also says, "I’m hungry!"
As mentioned, it’s a signal to mom from her kittens and visa-versa.
A dominant cat will purr loudly to a non-dominant one, to signal non-aggression.
Cats purr when frightened.
Sick, ill and injured cats will purr to tell others they feel bad.
Cats purr when they want something from us. They are not stupid, and have learned that a purr will get them a treat far quicker than anything else will.

Thought this would be of interesting reading for all you cat owners out there.
Have to say my cat Jess only purrs he never miaows strange cat Laughing

Same with George when he had his bite on his side - he was lying on my bed and growling and purring at the same time, bless him!
