What is it?
The insertion of needles at particular points on the body to help in the treatment of a variety of health problems, from chronic pain to arthritis and skin conditions. The word acupunture literally means 'piercing with a sharp instrument'. It is believed to have been invented by the chinese; however recent evidence suggests it may have been used in india some 5,000 years ago. 

How does it work ? 
The chinese believe the body is made up of energy channels which flow throughout it. The energy, called qi (pronounced chi), passes through these channels once every 24 hours. If there is a blockage anywhere along these channels also known as meridans this results in an imbalance which they believe can cause the disease. Inserting needles at particular points on the meridan can help to free up blockages and stimulate the healing process. The frequent use of antibiotics from the vets can sometimes weaken your dog’s immune system. This can lead to more health problems in later life so many owners are choosing to give their dogs herbal alternatives.

Would it benefit my dog ? 
The illnesses that can be treated with acupuncture are wide and varied. They include arthritis, paralysis, back pain, incontinence,circulation problems, hip displaysia, allergic conditions and injuries involving muscles, tendons and ligaments. It can be used on all types and breeds of dog. There has been development of herbal medicines designed for dogs. The main difference between herbal and Western medicine is that herbal treatment basically allows the focus on the main disease for a quick fix.
